I absolutely LOVE to craft (just look around my blog for proof). And I believe that almost everyone has the ability to be creative and make something amazing. Many people think that they can’t create because they have never tried or someone along the way has told them they couldn’t do it (totally rude). I’m here to tell you that if you have the desire to craft then you should do it! All the time people tell me “Oh I could never do that” when they see my creations or DIY projects. Then I ask, “Have you tried”? You can’t truly know if you can accomplish something unless you have actually tried. There are so many reasons to be creative and express your individuality through crafts but I have limited the list to five reasons to craft so it wouldn’t take you all day to read this post!

1. It’s Unique
The thing I love the most about crafting is that whatever you make is one of a kind. Even if you are using a pattern, your finished product will be unique and totally you. When I craft I’m reminded of what the artist NF (love him!) says in his song Know “Everybody’s out here shoppin’ tryna find a different product in the same stores”. This is SO true! Trust me, I spent 8 years in retail and I endlessly heard “I want something that no one else has” at which point I would say “Good luck with that”. Just kidding, obviously I didn’t say this because I wouldn’t have made it 8 years but I definitely thought it a few times!
With crafting you have the power to create something that fits your personal needs exactly. Now can anything you buy from a box store boast the same? I think not.
2. Makes Great Gifts
In our busy world many people never craft or even know anyone who does. This is why when you create a special gift for someone they are deeply touched. Anyone can go to the store and buy a gift but when you make a gift, it shows that you value that person enough to spend your time and effort on their gift. Every time I give a handmade gift the response is overwhelming positive because it’s unique and thoughtful! Personally, I love when someone goes out of their way to create something one of a kind for me even if it’s just a decorated card envelope.
3. It’s Good for Your Health
I know this sounds bizarre but it’s true! Studies show that someone who is actively creating improves the brain’s ability to grow new brain cells, which I could totally use. Also, creating increases dopamine in the brain, which is the feel-good hormone so you can’t be sad when you are creating! Another benefit is that it helps fight dementia. We’ve all heard how as you age it’s beneficial to play games and puzzles to help combat memory loss. While creating, crafting, or sewing you are causing your mind to remember how to do a specific task, which exercises your memory and helps to improve it.
4. A Sense of Accomplishment
This may not be a big deal for you, but for me it’s huge because I’m extremely goal driven. After I have finished a project I love to remind myself that all of the parts that I now see as this finished project was nothing but raw materials that I created something amazing out of. It’s even more satisfying when I have learned a new skill in order to create my project. I have found that the harder the project the bigger the sense of accomplishment! It also doesn’t hurt when someone complements your handiwork and can’t believe that you made it!
5. You’ll Never Be Bored
I think one of the most important reasons to craft is you’ll NEVER be bored! How many times have been flat out, lose your mind bored? I know the answer, too many times to count! Personally, I tend to get restless when I don’t have something to occupy my time. That’s the amazing thing about crafting, you always have something to do! Crafting helps you turn all that wasted down time into something productive. Also, if you worry about watching too much TV then craft while you watch! This is what I did when I created my beaded and quilted ornaments so I could still enjoy TV without feeling like I wasted my time.
No matter what your project is or how it turns out I think the most important step in crafting is to just START! So, take my reasons to craft in consideration the next time you are tempted to put off a crafting project! SO…….what are some of your reasons to craft?
