I don’t know about you but I’m super proud to be an American! And….as July 4th approaches I’ve started thinking about how I can decorate to show my American pride! However, after several days of thinking, researching, and total fail crafting projects I couldn’t think of anything that I really wanted to make (so sad).
Then I saw a picture online of a pillow that used prairie points to decorate the front! I thought how cute would that be to use prairie points to make an American Flag mini quilt? The answer is totally cute! So, I went to work designing this mini quilt and I’m so happy with the end result! Now it’s your turn to show your American spirit and make your own American flag mini quilt!

Important Info!
When printing the sewing pattern PDF make sure to adjust the print settings. After you click on the print button in the PDF the printer dialog box will come up. On this screen you want to change the default zoom page size to be Actual Size. If you don’t change this setting then the pattern will print smaller than intended (so sad!).
What To Do!
To begin the American flag mini quilt you need to download the free pattern from The Pattern Stash. Once you have all of your squares cut you need to press them. Fold the square to form a triangle and press.
Next, fold the two folded sides and press once more. Repeat for the rest of the squares (it helps to watch a movie while doing this!).
Then open a red triangle and slip another triangle inside it. Measure that the points are 1 3/4 inch apart. Pin the triangles together.
Next, repeat the above process for the other 4 red triangles. Each red row has six triangles in it.
Then stitch the red triangles together using an 1/8 inch seam allowance.
Next, take one of the red strips and lay it right side up.
Then lay the sewn red triangles on top of the strip. You want your triangles to be in the center of the strip. Don’t worry if the triangles go over the sides of the strip.
Next, lay one of the white strips right side down on top of the red triangles and pin. Then sew the strips and triangles together.
Next, press the triangles down toward the red strip.
Then we are going to repeat the process with the white triangles. However, instead of using 6 triangles like we did for the red we will use 7 for the white rows. So, open one white triangle and insert another into it. Measure that the points are 1 3/4 inch apart and pin.
Next, repeat the measuring process for the other 5 white triangles and pin.
Then sew the triangles together using an 1/8 inch seam allowance.
Next, take the piece we just added the red triangles to and lay it right side up.
Then place the white triangles onto the white strip. Make sure the triangle points are in the middle of two of the previous rows triangles before you sew. Don’t worry about the hangover of the triangles over the sides of the strips because we will cut them off later.
Next, place a red strip on top of the white triangles, pin, and sew together.
Then once again press the triangles down toward the bottom of the quilt. Repeat this process to complete the other 4 red and 3 white rows. Take note that on the last red row you will be putting a blue strip over the triangles instead of a white one!
Once you have finished assembling the red and white rows it’s time for the blue rows! The first blue row will be a 7 triangle row. So, lay out your triangles, measure, pin, and sew them together using an 1/8 inch seam allowance.
Next, place your sewn blue triangles over the blue strip.
Then place a blue strip right side down on top of your triangles. Pin, sew, and then press the triangles down like you did in previous rows. Repeat this process for the next two blue rows one 6 triangle and one 7 triangle row.
For the last blue row pin and sew your 6 triangles together.
Then place on the last blue strip and pin. Since this is the last row it won’t have a strip that goes on top of it. Also, it needs to be sewn to the strip using a 1/8 inch seam allowance.
Next, press the triangles really well! Then using a straight edge and rotary cut off the triangles that are past your fabric strips.
Then lay the front of the mini quilt on top of the back fabric. Pin and cut out the back material. Next, cut a batting piece the same size as your backing.
Then pin up the last row’s triangle tips. Make sure to put the pin heads out of the way of your machine foot or you will totally hit them with your needle!
Next, lay down the batting then the back piece right side up. Then lay the front of the quilt right side down on top of the backing. Pin all the way around. Sew around entire quilt leaving a 2 inch turning hole on the bottom of the quilt (the first red strip).
Once sewn trim seams and MAKE SURE TO REMOVE the bottom triangle’s pins through the turning hole! Next, turn quilt right side out through the turning hole.
Then push out all of the seams really well and press all of the triangles. After you turn under the turning hole press it and hand stitch it closed.
FYI! If you want this super cute mini quilt to be a pillow then you’re in luck! All you have to do to make it a pillow is stuff the mini quilt before you close the turning hole and BOOM you have an American flag pillow!
Next, use the ribbon and sew two hangers about two inches down from the top of the quilt.
Now for my quilt the top row of blue triangles kept popping up even after I pressed them. So, I just tacked each triangle in the top row down to the blue strip. If you do this make sure to NOT catch the front layer of the triangle so you don’t see your thread.
Then all that is left to do is hang your super cute American flag mini quilt!
Isn’t this a super cute way of showing your patriotic American pride? I’m so in love with this mini quilt and can’t wait to hang it! And…don’t forget to grab your FREE copy of the pattern available in The Pattern Stash! Just fill out the below form and instantly receive an email with the password!
