Since I was a child I’ve wanted to learn how to crochet. Back in the day I asked an older relative to teach me how to crochet. Unfortunately, the experience didn’t go well and involved her repeatedly losing her temper and me learning absolutely nothing about crochet. The only thing I clearly remember from that training session is her telling me (several times) that I would never learn how to crochet. So, for the next umpteenth years every time I thought about learning how to crochet I would recall that horrible experience.
However, one day I decided that I REALLY wanted to learn how to crochet so I went to one of my favorite places online to learn, YouTube. Armed with a borrowed hook and yarn I watched countless videos and after the thousandth try, I learned how to crochet! So, excited with this newfound knowledge I set out to find my own crochet hooks. I wanted nice hooks, however, I wasn’t willing to spend a lot of money on them. That’s when I came across the Susan Bates Silvalume crochet hooks. I bought one size and started crocheting everything I could! If you are just learning how to crochet or a have been doing it for years you might wonder if the Susan Bates Silvalume crochet hooks are the right hooks for you. Well, then read on and I will tell you what I think about these colorful and lightweight hooks!

Pros!
To begin this review I will first list the pros of the Susan Bates Silvalume crochet hooks.
Deep Groove!
This may seem weird to mention as a positive feature but it’s one that’s super important. When your hook’s groove isn’t deep enough it becomes hard to hook and pull through your yarn. I have a Boye crochet hook that isn’t cut as deep as the Susan Bates hooks. And…… I find that I never use it! Also, the deep groove of the hook is very smooth. So, you never have to worry about your yarn getting caught on aluminum shards.
Imprinted Hook Sizes!
Obviously, it’s important to know what size each of your crochet hooks are. With that being said many crochet hooks on the market only have printed on hook sizes! As unbelievable as that seems, it’s true! You never have to worry about the sizes rubbing off since the sizes are imprinted as part of the hook’s design. So, you never have to guess what size your hook is!
Inexpensive!
When I first bought these hooks this was seriously the deciding factor. Now that I absolutely love the hooks this is still one of the most exiting benefits of the hooks. These hooks range in price according to the size that you buy but are usually under $3.00 each. Susan Bates also offers a set of different size hooks that is even a better deal than buying them individually. The only drawback about the set is if you already have some of the sizes that’s included.
Easily Available!
One of the worse things about falling in love with a crafting supply brand is when it’s hard to find. Luckily, most retailers (except Wal-Mart) carry Susan Bates Silvalume crochet hooks. I know for sure that both Joann Fabric and Michaels carry a full line of Susan Bates hooks! Also, you can easily find the hook sets at good prices at online retailers such as Amazon.
Offered In Several Sizes!
This line of crochet hooks are available in several sizes (let all crocheters rejoice)! These lightweight hooks are offered in sizes B, C, D, E, F, J, K, L, M, and N. That is a lot of sizes! The fact that they have so many sizes means you can use them on a full spectrum of projects and yarns, from lace to thick afghans!
Lightweight!
The Susan Bates crochet hooks are made of aluminum, which is super light. This makes it easy to carry several sizes in your work bag because they don’t weigh much! Also, I don’t like working with a super heavy hook because of hand fatigue so I think these light weight hooks are perfect.
Cons!
For the record, I thought REALLY long and REALLY hard about the negative aspects of these hooks but only came up with one!
Comfort!
I like to crochet for a really long time when I crochet. Unfortunately, after a couple of hours these hooks start to hurt my fingers. My sister bought me some comfort grips to put on the hooks but they really don’t offer enough comfort. I wish that these hooks had removable comfort gel grips to help with hand and finger fatigue. Susan Bates does offer a soft ergonomic crochet hook line but it doesn’t come in every size that the Silvalume hooks do (sad sigh). However, I’m in the process of making polymer clay handles for my hooks to help with hand strain (watch out for the tutorial)!
Final Thoughts!
In case you haven’t already figured it out, I’m a total sell out when it comes to the Susan Bates Silvalume crochet hooks. They were the first hooks that I bought and are still my favorite hooks! These lightweight and inexpensive hooks are the perfect tool for all crocheters be they a novice or expert! I hope that you find you are as in love with the Susan Bates crochet hooks that I am. So, happy hooking!
