I’m notorious for losing my pen, which is why I designed and made the journal pen holder (which turned out super cute). However, as soon as I made the pen holder, I started thinking, where am I going to put my pencil, eraser, and my stickers? That’s when it hit me, I should make a journal zipper pen pouch to hold all my amazing things!
So, I went to the drawing board and designed a zippered pen pouch that’s totally adorable! The easy-to-make journal zipper pen pouch is so quick to whip up and could totally be made just using scrap fabric (total win). So, are you ready to sew a journal zipper pen pouch to corral all those pesky pens that keep running away? Then let’s get sewing!

What You Need!
- Quilting Cotton ~ 1/4 yard in 2 colors
- Lightweight Fusible Fleece
- 9 Inch Zipper
- Wonder Clips ~ Optional but super handy!
- Matching Thread
- 1 Inch Elastic
- Free #77 ~ Journal Zipper Pen Pouch Printable Pattern ~ Available in The Pattern Stash! Head on down to the bottom of the page, fill out the form, and instantly receive an email with the password!
FYI! Only have a zipper that is longer than 9 inches? No worries! As long as the zipper is 9 inches or longer you can use it because we will cut the zipper down to the correct size.
FYI!
All sewing is done with a 1/4 inch seam allowance unless stated otherwise.
Important Info!
When printing the sewing pattern PDF make sure to adjust the print settings. After you click on the print button in the PDF the printer dialog box will come up. On this screen you want to change the default zoom page size to be Actual Size. If you don’t change this setting then the pattern will print smaller than intended (so sad!).

What To Do!
Make Front Pocket
To begin the journal zipper pen pouch you need to download the FREE pattern from The Pattern Stash and cut it out. Then take all of the fabric A pieces and press your fusible fleece to the wrong side of the fabric.
Lay the top front pocket fabric A piece right side up.

Next, lay the zipper right side down with zipper pull to the right on top of the fabric A piece.
Then lay the top pocket piece fabric B right side down on top of the zipper.
Next, clip the top side of the fabric sandwich with Wonder Clips .
Then using your zipper foot sew across the top seam.
Next, press the fabric pieces wrong sides together and press along the zipper really well.
Then lay your bottom front pocket fabric A piece right side up.
Next, lay the front pocket piece with zipper right side down with the zipper pull to the left.

Then lay your bottom front pocket piece fabric B right side down on top of the zipper.

Next, use your Wonder Clips and clip the top seam. Using your zipper foot sew across the seam.
Then press the bottom front pocket pieces fabric wrong sides together. Once again press near the zipper really well.
Next, clip the journal zipper pen pouch on every side.
Then top stitch down both sides of the zipper using an 1/8 seam allowance. Once you have pressed the front pocket piece really well then take your fabric A and fabric B main body pieces and trim them up to make the same size of the front pocket piece. DO NOT cut your zipper down just yet, we’ll get to that in a bit.
Add Elastic
Next, you need to figure out how long you need your elastic. To do this just measure the front cover of your Bible, journal, or planner and add an inch to that number. For example my Happy Planner’s cover is 9.75 inches so I made my elastic 10.75 inches long.
Then take your main body fabric A piece and lay right side up. Take your elastic and clip or pin it to the center of the piece.

Assemble Journal Zipper Pen Pouch
Next, open the zipper to the center of the front pocket piece.
Then take your front pocket piece and lay it with fabric A right side down.
Next, lay the main body fabric B right side down on top of the fabric B of the front pocket piece.
Then clip around the entire pouch.
Next, sew from the first pink arrow around the side, top, and other side of the pouch to the other pink arrow. We want to NOT sew across the bottom of the pouch yet.
Then clip up the bottom of the interior fabric B and sew just across the bottom of the fabric A outside pieces (where the pink clips are).

Next, clip up the bottom of outside fabric A and clip the bottom of the interior fabric B pieces.
Then sew across the bottom of the interior fabric B pieces. Leave a 2 inch turning hole in the center of the piece. Then release the clips of the outside pieces and sew down both sides of the pouch through all the layers.

Next, clip the seams and using old scissors cut off the zipper even with your pouch pieces. DO NOT use your sewing scissors to cut the zipper as it will dull them (so sad).

Then take a pencil or chopstick (my turning go to) and turn the journal zipper pen pouch right side out. Take your time turning your pouch right side out so you don’t pull too hard on your seams near the turning hole.
Next, use your turning apparatus and push out all the seams and corners.
Then open your journal zipper pen pouch and press under the turning hole seams and clip. Sew the turning hole really close to the opening. You want to go over this seam a couple of times to ensure that it doesn’t come open when you’re using the pouch.
Next, take your super cute and functional journal zipper pen pouch and put it on your journal!
I’m so in love with this super handy and adorable journal zipper pen pouch! Can’t you just imagine all of the books you can add this pen pouch to? I can! And this would make an amazing gift for practically everyone you know!
