I LOVE decorating for the fall season! Every year during fall there are so many cute signs for sale! Truth be told, I have bought so many of these little signs to decorate my house. However, this year I thought why not make a fall sign instead of buying one? This of course set me down the path of thinking about ALL of the possible sayings that I could put on the sign! Since I couldn’t narrow the sayings down to just one I decided to make this fall pumpkin wood sign double sided so I could put two (total score)!
Since getting the Cricut Maker I have been experimenting with making designs with wood (the main reason I bought the Maker). So, when I decided I wanted to make a fall sign I just KNEW it had to made out of wood. After hunting around I found some Basswood in 8 x 24 at Joann Fabric and I knew that this project was going to be epic!

What To Do!
To begin the fall pumpkin wood sign you need to download the free SVG file from The Pattern Stash and upload it into Cricut Design Space. Need help doing this? Check out my post How To Upload SVG Files to Cricut Design Space for step-by-step instructions! Next, you need to tape the basswood to the cutting mat using painter’s tape.
Once you have the wood secured to the mat it’s time to cut! Since you are cutting wood there are some extra steps that need to be taken. The first step is to move all of the white star rollers on the bar in the Cricut all the way to the right. Then when you go to cut the pumpkin you need to click on the Mirror button in Cricut Design Space (see pink arrow). This makes sure that the Cricut is cutting on the back side of your design so if there are any chips while cutting it won’t ruin your project.
Tip! When you cut basswood Cricut automatically makes 14 passes over the design. This is because every pass it makes it cuts a little bit deeper. Because this is a very simple cut you probably don’t need the Cricut to do the full 14 passes. So, once you get to 9 or 10 pause the Cricut and see if your design has been cut all the way through. This will prevent the Cricut from cutting too deep and ruining your mat.
After you cut the first pumpkin you have to click on the Mirror button again for the second pumpkin.
Now, this is a totally optional step as you could easily leave your pumpkin natural. However, I wanted my pumpkin to be fancy so I used acrylic paint and painted both pumpkins that I cut.
Then I took a stencil that I had on hand and used metallic paint to make my pumpkin have some pizzazz!
After your pumpkin sides are completely dry it’s time to glue the two sides together using basswood glue.
So, you want to make sure that you apply the glue generously. Make sure that you get glue all the way to the pumpkin’s edge.
Then carefully place the two sides of the pumpkin together. Adjust the sides until the edges are perfectly aligned. The bottle of the glue states that it completely dries in 24 hours. So, I placed my pumpkin under some heavy books and left overnight to dry.
Next, cut and weed the sayings for the two sides of the fall pumpkin wood sign. Make sure you put your white star rollers back in place before you cut your vinyl!
Then cut a piece of transfer tape and place it on top of one of the sayings.
Next, press the transfer tape onto the vinyl. I use my Cricut scraper to do the job!
Then carefully pull the baking away from the vinyl leaving the design on the transfer tape.
Now, align the first saying on one side of the pumpkin sign. When you are happy with the placement smooth the vinyl onto the pumpkin.
Then carefully remove the transfer tape to reveal one side of your sign!
TIP! Did you know that transfer tape is reusable? That’s right if a piece of transfer tape is still sticky and working don’t trow it away! So, any time you use transfer tape make sure to keep the backing so you can replace it after use.
Next, repeat the steps you did for the first side of the sign for the second side. Once the saying has been transferred to the transfer tape line it up on the pumpkin. When you’re happy with the placement press the vinyl down and remove the transfer tape.
Here is side one of the pumpkin finished!
And…. of course here is the second side!
So, what do you think? Isn’t this cute little sign the perfect fall decor for your house? And the added bonus is it’s double sided so you can change the saying depending on your mood!
