One of life’s greatest annoyances is not being able to figure out which dresser drawer goes in what spot (heavy sigh). I have had some REALLY frustrating moments when trying to put dresser drawers back into place. Why can’t furniture makers design all the slots the same size? Who in their right mind would make dresser drawers different sizes?
There, I have vented my frustration with this whole dresser drawer epidemic, I mean irritation and can move on. Luckily, I came up with a plan to help avoid this problem in the future (my future self says thank you!). Recently, I have started stenciling (now I’m in love) and thought why not stencil something on the back of the drawers to help identify the order of the drawers for the next time I have to remove them. I dug through my stencils and found one that had a little flower on it which was the perfect size! I went to work on my project feeling pretty satisfied with myself for this easy solution to an age-old problem.

What You Need!
- Acrylic Paint (I used FolkArt metallic acrylic paint)
- Stencil Brush
- Paper Plates
- Nitrile Gloves (if you don’t want to get paint on fingers)
- Painter’s or Masking Tape
- Stencil (I used the same stencil that I used for my stenciled bird decor)
- Paper Towels
Tip! If you use masking tape make sure that you are very careful when pulling off the stencil. Masking tape tends to stick harder than painter’s tape and I ended up ripping the bird’s wing when I pulled the tape off.
What to Do!
To begin this stenciled dresser drawers DIY, tape the stencil to the drawer. Make sure to tape off any opening in the stencil that you don’t want painted.
Put just a little amount of paint on brush. Tap the bristles of the brush on the paper plate and then on the paper towel. The bristles should be almost dry when you start to stencil. Tap the paint brush on the stencil careful to hold down the stencil as you work.
This is where I had an epic fail moment! I broke the cardinal rule of stenciling and put WAY too much paint on my paintbrush. Can you tell that the paint bleed under the stencil? Yep, I was so irritated that I just put the drawer back into the dresser and stewed about it. The next day it dawned on me that I’m stenciling on wood, so out came the sand paper!
After I sanded the original flower off I carefully placed my stencil over the faint outline of the “ghost of flower past” and stenciled it again.
Here is the first finished drawer!
Obviously, this is the second drawer.
Three cute purple flowers means this is the third drawer!
All done! Now the next time I remove my dresser drawers I can put them back without losing my temper! Trust me when that time comes you will be thanking your past self for doing this easy stencil dresser drawers DIY!
