I LOVE walking! Seriously, if I could go on a long walk every day I would be a super happy girl! When I go walking I like to carry a few things with me but HATE anything in my hands or even in my pant pockets. So…I’ve always been a huge fan of the fanny pack even when it wasn’t cool to wear them anymore!
A few years back a friend’s child had a school fundraiser and they were selling small fanny packs! So I bought myself one and I absolutely loved it! However, the fanny pack I bought wasn’t as cute as I would have liked it which got my creative juices flowing. After a lot of designing, I’m excited to share with you my version of a small fanny pack that is the perfect size to take walking or to sporting/concert events. And the best part of the pattern…I designed it to have belt holder loops on the back so you only have to make one belt or use a belt that you already own! This helps to keep costs down for future fanny packs you make and also makes the fanny pack more versatile because you can use any belt with it. So are you ready to make your own fanny pack? Then let’s get started!

When printing the sewing pattern PDF make sure to adjust the print settings. After you click on the print button in the PDF the printer dialog box will come up. On this screen you want to change the default zoom page size to be Actual Size. If you don’t change this setting then the pattern will print smaller than intended (so sad!).

What To Do!
Make The Front Pocket
To begin the double pocket fanny pack you need to download the free pattern from The Pattern Stash and cut it out. Take both of the front pocket pieces and iron fusible fleece to the wrong side of the fabric.

Then take the top piece of the front pocket and with right side up place the zipper right side down with the zipper pull to the right on one of the long sides. It’s OK if the zipper is longer than your fabric.
Next, take your top pocket lining piece and lay it right side down on top of the zipper. Using a zipper foot sew along the long side of the front pocket piece.
Then open the front pocket pieces and iron really well.
Next, lay the bottom piece of the front pocket right side up and place the zipper at the top edge with the zipper pull to the left.

Then take the bottom lining piece for the front pocket and lay that on top of the zipper right side down. Using the zipper foot sew your fabric sandwich.
Next, press the front pocket pieces down really well and pin/clip around the edge.
Then using an 1/8 seam allowance sew a topstitch down both sides of the zipper.
Next, open your zipper to the center of the front pocket.

Then take all of your lining pieces and the back outside piece and trim them down to the size of your front pocket. Once trimmed up take one of your lining pieces and lay it right side up.

Next, take your front pocket and lay it with the front pocket lining facing right side down.
Then clip all of your layers together making sure to clip the open zipper so it doesn’t shift during sewing.
Next, baste stitch along all four sides of the front pocket. DO NOT cut the excess of the zipper just yet. I like to keep the excess of the zipper on until final construction to ensure that you can catch it in the seam when sewing.
Make The Zipper Tabs
Next, take one of your zipper tabs and press in half.
Then open the zipper tab and press the two sides into the center seam.

Then take your zipper and insert the end that has the metal stop into your zipper tab.

Next, clip or pin the zipper and the tab.
Then using a 1/8 inch seam allowance sew the edge of the zipper tab. You want to sew back and forth a couple of times to strengthen the seam.
Next, cut off the excess tab fabric making sure to cut along the side of the zipper tape and not actually cutting the zipper.
Then using a ruler measure your zipper to 7 inches including the zipper tab you just added. Open your zipper to the 4 inch mark and then cut your zipper to measure 7 inches. Make sure to NOT use your sewing scissors to cut the zipper or you could ruin your good scissors!
Next, press your next zipper tab and insert the cut side of the zipper into the tab. Place the zipper sides as close as possible to each other but don’t let them overlap.

Then once you’ve sewn across the seam several times you can cut off the excess of the zipper tab fabric.

FYI! Want to see a video of this being made? Then check out the video at minute 18:45 to see how to do this!
Then take your fusible interfacing and press onto one side of the wrong side of the belt holder.
Next, clip around the three open sides of the belt holder.
Then sew around the three open sides leaving a small turning hole in the bottom of the belt holder.
Next, clip the seams and turn right side out.
Then press the belt holder really well and turn under the turning hole. Repeat to make the next belt holder.

Then center your two belt holders on the back outside piece of the fanny pack with the turning holes on the bottom. I like to place them 3/4 inch from the top and bottom of the back piece and 1 inch from the right and left sides. Of course if you have trimmed down your piece to match your front pocket the measurements won’t be exact. Just place them as close to the middle as possible.
Next, sew across the top and bottom of the belt holders making sure that you catch the turning holes on the bottom while sewing. Sew over these a couple of times to reinforce them.
Add Main Zipper
Then take your front pocket piece and center the main compartment zipper. You want to place the zipper right side down with the zipper pull to the left.
FYI! Want to see a video of this being made? Then check out the video at minute 23:25 to see how to do this!
Next, place one of your lining pieces right side down on top of the front pocket. Using a zipper foot sew across your fabric sandwich.
Then place your back outside piece right side up and then place the main compartment zipper right side down on top. Make sure that your outside pieces are lined up on the right and left.
Next, place the last lining piece right side down on top of the zipper. Sew the seam using a zipper foot.

Assemble Fanny Pack

FYI! Want to see a video of this being made? Then check out the video at minute 25:22 to see how to do this!
Then place the outside pieces right sides together and the lining pieces right sides together. Pin/clip around the entire outside seam. Sew around the fanny pack leaving a 2 to 3 inch turning hole in the lining (where my purple clips are). Now make sure that when you get to the zipper tabs you DO NOT sew through the zipper tabs. You should sew right beside the zipper tabs but not through them to make sure they sit right when the fanny pack is finished.

Once you have sewn the fanny pack use your old scissors and cut off the excess of the front pocket zipper. Make sure to not cut too close to the seam when cutting.
Next, trim up the seam allowance and turn your fanny pack right side out through the lining turning hole.
Then press your fanny pack really well.
Next, take your lining and press under the seam allowance of the turning hole. Sew across the opening a couple of times and then your fanny pack is all done!
Make Belt
Insert your belting into the first side of the buckle in the outside hole.

Next, slip the belting into the next hole of the buckle.

Then take the side of the belting you just put through the buckle and insert it into the back then the middle of the strap adjuster.
Next, turn under the short side of the belting and sew across the bottom seam a couple of times.
Then take the other side of the belting and insert it into the first hole of the strap adjuster.
FYI! Want to see a video of this being made? Then check out the video at minute 29:34 to see how to do this!
Next, insert the belting into the last hole and this side of the adjustable belt is complete.

To add the second strap adjuster take the long side of the belting and insert it into the last hole then the first hole of the other strap adjuster.
Then take the belting and insert it into the other side of the buckle in the outside hole then the first hole.

Next, take the belting and insert it into the outside hole then the middle hole of the strap adjuster. Make sure that you are going under the belting you already inserted into the strap adjuster.
Then turn under the short side of the belting and sew at the bottom seam several times.
Once you have sewn your belt your fanny pack and belt are completed!

Then all that is left to do is insert your belt into the back of your fanny pack and take it on your next adventure!
For this tutorial I used canvas cotton for the outside and I absolutely LOVE how it turned out. Now if you decide to use canvas for the fanny pack I would suggest to only use it for the outside pieces and use quilting cotton for the lining to help reduce bulk.
However, if you want to use quilting cotton to make this fanny pack it works really well! This fanny pack was made totally from quilting cotton and it turned out just as well as the canvas one did.
So…are you already thinking of all of the cute colors you can make this fanny pack in? I love this pattern so much because you only need to make one belt. So if you want to make multiple fanny packs you don’t have to have the added cost of the belt for each fanny pack you make!
