Double Pocket Fanny Pack Tutorial ~ It's So Corinney

Double Pocket Fanny Pack

I LOVE walking! Seriously, if I could go on a long walk every day I would be a super happy girl! When I go walking I like to carry a few things with me but HATE anything in my hands or even in my pant pockets. So…I’ve always been a huge fan of the fanny pack even when it wasn’t cool to wear them anymore!

A few years back a friend’s child had a school fundraiser and they were selling small fanny packs! So I bought myself one and I absolutely loved it! However, the fanny pack I bought wasn’t as cute as I would have liked it which got my creative juices flowing. After a lot of designing, I’m excited to share with you my version of a small fanny pack that is the perfect size to take walking or to sporting/concert events. And the best part of the pattern…I designed it to have belt holder loops on the back so you only have to make one belt or use a belt that you already own! This helps to keep costs down for future fanny packs you make and also makes the fanny pack more versatile because you can use any belt with it. So are you ready to make your own fanny pack? Then let’s get started!

What You Need!

FYI! Only have a zipper that’s longer than 9 inches? No worries! As long as the zipper is 9 inches or longer you can use it because we will cut the zipper down to the correct size.

FYI!

All sewing is done with a 1/4 inch seam allowance unless stated otherwise.

Important Info!

When printing the sewing pattern PDF make sure to adjust the print settings. After you click on the print button in the PDF the printer dialog box will come up. On this screen you want to change the default zoom page size to be Actual Size. If you don’t change this setting then the pattern will print smaller than intended (so sad!).

What To Do!

Make The Front Pocket

To begin the double pocket fanny pack you need to download the free pattern from The Pattern Stash and cut it out. Take both of the front pocket pieces and iron fusible fleece to the wrong side of the fabric.

Then take the top piece of the front pocket and with right side up place the zipper right side down with the zipper pull to the right on one of the long sides. It’s OK if the zipper is longer than your fabric.

Place The Top Piece Right Side Up And Place Zipper Right Side Down

Next, take your top pocket lining piece and lay it right side down on top of the zipper. Using a zipper foot sew along the long side of the front pocket piece.

Then open the front pocket pieces and iron really well.

Then using a ruler measure your zipper to 7 inches including the zipper tab you just added. Open your zipper to the 4 inch mark and then cut your zipper to measure 7 inches. Make sure to NOT use your sewing scissors to cut the zipper or you could ruin your good scissors!

Next, press your next zipper tab and insert the cut side of the zipper into the tab. Place the zipper sides as close as possible to each other but don’t let them overlap.

Then center your two belt holders on the back outside piece of the fanny pack with the turning holes on the bottom. I like to place them 3/4 inch from the top and bottom of the back piece and 1 inch from the right and left sides. Of course if you have trimmed down your piece to match your front pocket the measurements won’t be exact. Just place them as close to the middle as possible.

Next, sew across the top and bottom of the belt holders making sure that you catch the turning holes on the bottom while sewing. Sew over these a couple of times to reinforce them.

For this tutorial I used canvas cotton for the outside and I absolutely LOVE how it turned out. Now if you decide to use canvas for the fanny pack I would suggest to only use it for the outside pieces and use quilting cotton for the lining to help reduce bulk.

However, if you want to use quilting cotton to make this fanny pack it works really well! This fanny pack was made totally from quilting cotton and it turned out just as well as the canvas one did.

So…are you already thinking of all of the cute colors you can make this fanny pack in? I love this pattern so much because you only need to make one belt. So if you want to make multiple fanny packs you don’t have to have the added cost of the belt for each fanny pack you make!
