Ya’ll I’m obsessed with zipper pouches. It’s totally the zipper pouches’ fault though, because they are so darn useful! Seriously, you can put absolutely anything in a zipper pouch. This obsession stems from my childhood when I had some sort of zipper pouch for my Barbie things, my collection of erasers (I know I was a pretty cool kid), and anything else that would fit into a zipper pouch!
This easy zipper pouch tutorial has been on my mind for a while because I want you to have the opportunity to make your own super easy zipper pouches! Just think of all the things you could make them for! I totally made one for my pencils, makeup, and even the silverware that I pack in my lunch kit! The possibilities are totally endless! So, are you ready to make your own zipper pouches for all the things? Then let’s begin!

FYI! Only have a zipper that is longer than 7 inches? No worries! As long as the zipper is 7 inches or longer you can use it because we will cut the zipper down to the correct size.
FYI!
All sewing is done with a 1/4 inch seam allowance unless stated otherwise.
Important Info!
When printing the sewing pattern PDF make sure to adjust the print settings. After you click on the print button in the PDF the printer dialog box will come up. On this screen you want to change the default zoom page size to be Actual Size. If you don’t change this setting then the pattern will print smaller than intended (so sad!).

What To Do!
Sew The Zipper Tabs
To begin the easy zipper pouch you need to download the FREE pattern from The Pattern Stash and cut it out. Then take one of the zipper tab pieces and press it lengthwise with wrong sides together.
Open the zipper tab and press the two sides into the middle and press.

Next, fold the zipper tab back together and press really well. Repeat on next zipper tab fabric piece.
Then insert your zipper into the zipper tab. Make sure that you insert the end of the zipper that has the stop as shown below.

Then clip the zipper tab with Wonder clips.
Next, sew across the zipper tab as close to the edge as your machine can get. MAKE SURE that you don’t hit the zipper stop because it will break your sewing machine needle (yep, I’ve done that).
Then cut the zipper tab along the side of the zipper making sure to NOT cut the zipper tape.
Next, OPEN your zipper and measure from the zipper tab end. Cut your zipper to 7 inches long including the first zipper tab. MAKE SURE your zipper pull is pulled down toward the zipper tab before you cut! Also, make sure to NOT use your sewing scissors to cut the zipper. If you do you’ll blunt your scissors (that would be horrible).
Then insert your cut end of your zipper into your next zipper tab. Make sure that the sides of zipper are side by side and not overlapping each other.
Next, clip the zipper tab and make sure you secure both sides of the zipper so they don’t shift while sewing.

Then topstitch across the zipper tab.

Next, cut the zipper tab along the side of the zipper tape. And…the zipper is complete!
Make Zipper Pouch
On to making the pouch! First press the fusible fleece onto the wrong side of both of the exterior fabric pieces.
Next, lay one of the exterior fabric piece right side up. Then lay the zipper face down in the center of one of the long sides of the exterior pieces. Make sure that the pull is on the left side when you place it. Next, lay one of the interior pieces right side down on top of the zipper. Clip all the layers together and sew across the top using a zipper foot.
Then open the layers and see if you like how straight the zipper looks. If you don’t like how the zipper looks NOW is the time to fix it.

Next, lay the other exterior piece right side up and lay the zipper sandwich right side down on top of it.

Then place the other interior piece on top of the zipper. Clip and sew across using a zipper foot.

Next, open the side you just sewed and once again double check the zipper. Press really well and make sure that you like the way the zipper looks. If you love it then move on to the next step!

Then place the two exterior pieces right sides together and the interior pieces right sides together. Clip this really well. I like to put a clip where the zipper is on both sides so I can pay close attention to it when sewing.
Next, sew around entire zipper pouch leaving a 2 inch turning hole in the bottom of the interior pieces. When you sew beside the zipper you want to make sure to NOT sew the zipper tab. You will be sewing right beside the zipper tab. If you catch the zipper tab with your sewing machine the zipper tab won’t lay flat. This is the reason that I mark where the zipper is on both sides of the pouch.
Then trim the seams and turn the easy zipper pouch right side out through the turning hole.
Next take a pencil or chopstick (my turning go to) and push out the zipper tabs. You can press your turning utensil under the zipper tab and pop it up. And don’t worry that there’s a hole, that’s on purpose.
Then press under the seam allowance for the turning hole in the lining and clip.
Next, sew the turning hole really close to the opening. You want to go over this seam a couple of times to ensure that it doesn’t come open when you’re using the pouch.
