M-I-C-K-E-Y-M-O-U-S-E, Mickey Mouse! Come on sing it with me now! I grew up with Mickey Mouse and his gang of friends! So, when I was trying to come up with an easy costume for Halloween the first character I thought about was Minnie Mouse. I think that Mickey and Minnie Mouse are probably the most recognized characters worldwide! Now, I know in recent years that Minnie is usually shown wearing a pink polka dot dress. However, for my costume I used my childhood doll of Minnie as my inspiration and she wore a red polka dot skirt. So, I guess you could say my costume is an old school Minnie Mouse costume (but not that old)!
Now, my golden rule for any costume I make is it MUST cost $20 or under to make or it’s a no go! I know this can seem really low but it’s totally doable. If you use coupons and make most of the items for the costume then nine times out of ten you can come out under budget. The most expensive items for this costume were the black shirt and white gloves. I couldn’t find white gloves anywhere except the Halloween store so I ended up paying more for them (so sad). With that being said, I still managed to come under the $20 cap when the Minnie Mouse costume was finished!

What You Need!
- Black Long Sleeve Shirt
- Red and White Polka Dot Fabric
- 3 Inch Wide Black Elastic
- Matching Thread
- Black Felt
- 3 Inch Wide Red and White Polka Dot Ribbon
- 3/4 Inch Wide Red Ribbon
- 2 Hair Alligator Clips
- White Gloves
- Glue Gun
What To Do!
Cut the 3 inch wide polka dot ribbon 7 1/2 inches long. Then cut the red 3/4 inch ribbon 4 inches long.
With wrong sides together overlap the two ends of the polka dot ribbon and glue down.
After you glue the ribbon will be in a tube.
Fold the ribbon 1/2 inch towards the back where the seam is. Hand press and flip ribbon.
Fold the ribbon towards the front while holding the last fold. This can get tricky but you can do it!
Fold the ribbon towards the back again.
Fold two more times, once towards the front and once towards the back.
When you have folded the entire ribbon it will look like an accordion.
This is where you will want to adjust any folds that look wonky! Find the center of the bow.
Take the 3/4 inch red ribbon and glue the first end to the back of the bow.
Wrap around the front of the bow and bring back to the backside of the bow. Glue down the end of the ribbon and trim.
Adjust the folds of the bow and it’s all done!
Cut out four 2 1/2 inch circles out of your black felt. Now, if your felt is really thick then you don’t have to cut four only two. My felt was on the thinner side so I cut four and glued two together to make them stronger. Cover the alligator clip with black felt to cover the metal piece. Cut the very end of the circle in a straight line so it will sit flat against the alligator clip. Glue down the circle to the felt covered alligator clip.
Glue your super cute bow to the front of the ear and admire your work!
Repeat the process for the second ear. Now have a set of snazzy Minnie Mouse ears!
To make the skirt I used the same technique that I used to make the skirt for the Pokémon ball costume (so cute). After you make the skirt you just have to add some white gloves and you are all set!
