Easy Pokémon Ball Halloween Costume

Pokémon Ball DIY Halloween Costume

Dressing up is my favorite thing about Halloween! Although, I will admit the candy’s pretty awesome too! Every year around August (yes, I said August) my creative juices start flowing and I try to decide what I will be for Halloween. Once I figure out what I will be, I set out to figure how I can make the costume. Now, I know that I could just buy a store bought costume but where is the fun in that? As much as I love dressing up for Halloween, I do have a golden rule when creating a costume. The costume CAN’T cost more than $20 total. Now, I know this seems really low for a Halloween costume and that’s precisely why I usually make my costume (plus it’s way more fun than buying one).

I struggled this year with what I wanted to be despite countless hours trying to figure it out! Finally, it hit me! If you have read my Pokémon ball Christmas ornament post then you know that I have recently become a Pokémon fan (Pikachu is so cute!). So, I was so excited when I finally had the brilliant idea to go as a Pokémon ball for Halloween! I fell so in love with the Pokémon Dectective Pikachu movie that I totally laughed that I didn’t think about this costume sooner! Seriously, I thought about being almost everything else before the Pokémon ball costume (shakes head).

What You Need!

  • Red Long Sleeve Shirt
  • White Quilting Fabric or White Bed Sheet
  • 3 Inch Wide Black Elastic
  • Black Felt
  • White Felt
  • Glue Gun
  • Black Thread and Needle
  • Black Tights
Use 3 Inch Wide Elastic for Skirt

FYI! So this easy Pokémon Ball costume only requires you to sew a skirt. However, if your sewing skills are not the greatest or you just don’t have the time you could totally just buy one and use a black belt.

FYI!

All sewing is done with a 1/4 inch seam allowance.

What To Do!

Make Skirt!

To begin the Pokémon Ball costume, measure the 3 inch wide elastic around your waist to make sure you have the right amount. So, you want to make sure that the elastic isn’t too tight on your stomach when you sit down! Then add a 2 extra inches to the amount you measured for sewing down when done.

Use 3 Inch Wide Elastic for Skirt

Then sew the elastic together where you marked.

This is where those extra inches you added to your measurement come into play.

Open Ends of Elastic After Sewing

Then open the extra inches of the elastic and pin down.

Pin Down Sides of Elastic

While using a straight stitch sew down both sides of the elastic. This will be face the inside of the skirt.

Sew Both Sides of Elastic Down

For the measurements of the skirt I used We All Sew’s tutorial to figure them out. Once I figured out my measurements I used wrapping paper (yep, wrapping paper) to cut out my skirt pieces. After cut your pieces place them with right sides together. While using a straight stitch sew down both sides of skirt.

Use Wrapping Paper to Make Pattern for Skirt

So, you need to use a loose tension stitch on your sewing machine to gather the skirt. On my machine the tension was set on 3 1/2.

Use A ZipZag Stitch To Sew Material To Elastic

Sew around entire top of skirt 1/4 inch from the top. Make sure that you leave the end threads long because you will need them long so you can pull these to gather the skirt.

Leave End Thread Long To Gather

Then pull the gathering threads until the entire skirt has been gathered.

Gently Pull Thread To Gather Skirt Top

Fold the elastic band flat and find where the two sides are. Then place a pin on either side of the elastic.

Measure and Pin Both Sides of Elastic

Match the pin on one side of the elastic to the side seam of the skirt. Make sure that the elastic edge is on the outside of your skirt.

Match Side Seam To Pin

So, now match the other side of the elastic to the other side seam.

Then you will have to play with your gathering stitches and pin your skirt all the way around to the elastic.

Pin Skirt To Elastic

STOP! Make sure that you have the seam of the elastic facing in towards the inside of the skirt. This is probably the most important step in the whole tutorial! Trust me, you will be really angry if you mess this up! While using a zig-zag stitch sew all the way around the top of the skirt.

Then try your skirt on and make sure it fits! Sounds pretty simple but if you do have to make tweaks it’s best to do that before you do the bottom seam. While you have the skirt on see how long you want the finished skirt to hit you. So for mine I turned under 1/2 inch of the bottom of the skirt. Iron the seam flat.

Fold Bottom Edge and Iron

So, whatever measurement you used for the first turn under for the seam turn that much under again. Then iron your seam and check that it doesn’t look wonky.

While using a straight stitch, sew the seam all the way around the skirt. Then press the skirt and it’s all done!

Make Button!

So, on to the button! Firstly, find round objects (like my amazing Pyrex glass bowl) that are 6, 4 1/2, and 3 1/2 inches and trace the them onto regular paper.

Use A Circle To Trace Circle

Then cut out the paper circles for all three pieces.

Cut Templates For All Three Circles for Pokemon Button

Then use your amazing templates and cut out one black and two white felt circles.

Use Template To Cut Out Black Felt

So, here are all three pieces ready for assembly!

Then glue the 4 1/2 inch white circle to the center of the black one. While I used hot glue to attach the pieces I’m sure you could use fabric glue as well.

Glue First White Felt Piece To Black Felt

Then take the 3 1/2 inch circle and glue it to the center of the larger white circle.

Glue Last White Felt Piece On Top Of First White Piece

Lastly, find the center of the front of the skirt. Then hand sew the button to the elastic. Rather then sewing the button I’m sure you could use hot glue to attach the button to the elastic. However, I wanted to make sure it would have some give when I sat down so I opted to hand sew it.

Then you are all done with your Pokémon ball costume! So, wasn’t that super easy? I love how this costume came out! And…if you love easy costumes then check out my Minnie Mouse costume too!
