Should You Use FolkArt Metallic Paint

Should You Use FolkArt Metallic Paint?

Have you noticed how metallic paint is really trendy right now? When I first started seeing all of the metallic projects online I totally didn’t see what the big deal was. However, over time I have become completely addicted to anything metallic! I confess I’m now one hundred percent on the metallic paint bandwagon. Now, I think “What about metallic paint?” anytime that I paint or think of painting a project!

Although metallic paint is a pretty new obsession for me, I’m not a newbie when it comes to using acrylic paints. When I was a little girl my mom had an old army footlocker full of acrylic paints. Being a super creative kid this footlocker was an endless supply of possibilities! Every time I had a craft project my mom would tell me to look for paint in her stash. She had SO many colors and I swear I used every single one! So, now when I go down the acrylic paint aisle I’m instantly transported back to my childhood! I remember how cool I thought I was when my mom said I could paint my white Converse shoes with her paints (don’t judge, it was the 90’s)!

Recently, I wanted to stencil a bird on a wood disk and I wanted to stencil it in a metallic gunmetal gray. As I looked at the acrylic paints at the craft store I realized that nothing tickled my fancy! I was pretty bummed then just as I was about to leave the paint aisle I saw exactly what I wanted! Seriously, I thought I would lose my mind I was so excited that FolkArt makes metallic acrylic paint! So, the question you may be asking is “Are FolkArt metallic acrylic paints right for my project?” Well you’re in luck, because I’m about to tell you my personal opinion on these super shiny paints! Fair warning, I’m a huge fan of these paints but nevertheless I will do my best to be completely unbiased.

Pros!

To begin, let me list some of the many virtues of the FolkArt metallic paints.

Use On Different Surfaces!

The bottle says that you can use it on all porous surfaces. Now, I have personally used them on a terracotta pot, wood, paper, particleboard, fabric, and even Styrofoam. I’m happy to say that the paint preformed remarkable well on all of these surfaces. They also have a line of Multi-Surface metallics. The bottle states that you can use them on glass, ceramics, wood, plastic, canvas, fabric, metal, and paper. Oh my goodness, that’s practically anything that I can think of to make!

Colors Are Vibrant!

This is something that I really worried about when I bought my first bottle of the FolkArt metallic paint. I hate when you buy paint and in the store it looks great only to look horrible when you apply it! But, no need to fear when it comes to these amazing paints. The colors are just as vibrant when you paint onto your project as they are in the bottle.

Good Coverage!

One of the worst things when painting is when the paint doesn’t have good coverage! The FolkArt metallic paints have great coverage, although I must admit that I put at least two coats of paint on everything that I’ve painted. Now, for the terracotta pot I painted I wanted the pot to be SUPER silver. So, I painted 3 coats and it made it pop! The only thing that I had a hard time getting the paint to cover is when I used it on Styrofoam for the Frozen inspired sign I made. It literally took me painting 6 coats on the Styrofoam ball for it to cover! However, after the sixth coat the ball looked amazing! And…… considering that spray paint melts Styrofoam I think it was well worth it.

Easy Clean Up!

I use these paints a lot with stencils and the cleanup is super easy with warm water and soap. Since these paints are water based, I can get ALL of the paint off my stencils! Which is amazing because I have never been able to do with other brands of paint. My paintbrushes are also easy to clean when using the FolkArt metallic paint.

Inexpensive!

Considering that most metallic paints that I see in stores are pretty pricey I was super excited to see that FolkArt metallic paints cost under $3.00 per 2 ounce bottle (at least at my craft store). And…. if you use a coupon (which I highly recommend) you can get them even cheaper! Also, I know that many craft stores will run major sales on these amazing paints. Make sure to keep an eye out for these sales so you can get every color!

So Many Colors!

True story I spent at least forty-five minutes on the paint aisle at Hobby Lobby trying to decide what shade of metallic paint I wanted to use when I was painting my USA travel map. I know this seems like a long time but because they have SO many colors to choose from it’s quite a tough decision! My favorite colors (as of right now) are the Gunmetal Gray, Rose Gold, Pearl White, Amethyst, Platinum, and Blue Sapphire.

Easy To Customize Colors!

So, even with all of the amazing colors that FolkArt offers some times they just don’t have the color you imagined. This happened to me when I envisioned a very light rose gold color for my project. So, the solution to this problem is to mix colors! I used the Pearl White to lighten the Rose Gold and got the prettiest and perfect color! This of course made me super happy.

Cons!

I must forewarn you, I don’t have very many negative comments on my now favorite paints! Needless to say, I do have a couple that I would have loved to not have.

Paint Dries In Pour Spout!

This may be minor to some people but it bothered me! If you leave the bottle open for any length of time the paint dries in the pour spout. This frustrates me because when I stencil I like to keep it open so I can easily add more paint to my paint tray. Sometimes when the paint dried it was hard to get the dried pieces out so I could use it again (toothpicks help here).

Dries Fast On Brush!

Every time I used these paints to stencil I felt like they dried too fast on my brush. Once it dried on the brush it would start to make clumps on my stenciling project. Then I would have to pick off the clumps from the wet paint (so irritating). Because of this issue I would only be able to use one stencil brush for so long then have to wash it out completely and let dry before I could continue!

My FolkArt Metallic Projects!

Obviously, I’m a huge fan of these metallic paints! Check out some of the projects that I have used these paints for.

Final Thoughts!

There you have it! Even with the two negative aspects of these paints, the FolkArt brand is my go to for metallic acrylic paints (really any acrylic paints). So, no matter what you need to paint if you are leaning towards using FolkArt metallic paints then I absolutely think you should! I hope you LOVE the FolkArt metallic paints as much as I do!
