DIY Soup Can Gift Card Holder Tutorial

DIY Soup Can Gift Card Holder

Anyone who knows me knows gift cards are not my favorite thing to give. Don’t get me wrong, I totally understand why people ask for gift cards for special occasions. Seriously, who doesn’t like to go shopping with free money? Totally no one! However, I still have a hard time getting excited about giving gift cards (blame my creative spirit). So, I have found that if I find creative ways to give gift cards I don’t mind gifting them as much!

Over the years I have crocheted holders, made explosion boxes, and made paper holders with my Cricut. However, this time when I was going to give a gift card to my sister I decided I wanted to do something a bit more sneaky. So, I came up with a super cute way of using a can of soup to hide the gift card and it turned out super cute! I have to tell you my sister was totally surprised and a little perplexed as to why exactly I had given her a can of soup! Once she opened it and realized there was a gift card and candy inside she was so amazed because she couldn’t figure out how I got it in the can!

What You Need!

FYI! Make sure that when you choose your soup can that the top of the can has a pop top (opens without a can opener). Also, the bottom of the can needs to NOT be rounded. You will be opening the bottom of the can and if it’s rounded you won’t be able to get the can opener on it (so sad).

What To Do!

Before beginning the soup can gift card holder you MUST buy or have on hand a safety can opener. The reason for this is because unlike traditional can openers the safety can opener cuts on the outside of the can and leaves a “lid” that you can glue down later.

Then you are going to take a hair dryer and carefully heat up the glue on the soup can label. Being VERY careful to not touch the hot can remove the label. This is an optional step but the label on the can I used was very close to the bottom and I was worried about cutting it with the can opener. Next, use the safety can opener and open the BOTTOM of the can of soup. Make sure to not go all the way around the can. Leave a little of the bottom of the can attached like shown below.

Next, wash out your can making sure to not cut yourself on any sharp edges of the can. Then dry out your can and you are ready to add your gift card or small gift! I didn’t want to just place the gift card inside the can so I crocheted an Incredible Hulk gift card holder and added some candy! This is the time for you to be creative about what you put inside your can! Just remember that you are working from the bottom of the can so make sure you place things accordingly.

Then place a small piece of tissue paper inside the can. This just makes sure that no hot glue will get on your gift. Next, take your hot glue gun and run a bead of glue around the outside of the lid. Then quickly fold the lid back down onto the can base.

Next, you need to add the label back onto the can. I just took hot glue and glued it down!

Then you have a super fun and creative gift card holder! All that is left to do is wrap this baby and give it to someone special.
