I love fabric! Obviously, I love to sew which means that like most sewers I have a TON of scrap material. No matter how many times I tell myself to use my scraps instead of buying new fabric I ultimately end up at the fabric store looking for new fabric (shakes head). So, as I was preparing to make some products to sell at a craft show I kept asking myself what I could make with all of my scrap pieces of fabric.
Then as I was planning what I would be making my family for Christmas it hit me (not literally!). I would make wristlet strap keychains to give to my family and to sell at the craft fair! These handy and cute wristlet strap keychains can be added to your keys or any wallet to make a wristlet. The wristlet strap keychain is the perfect scrap buster and can be made from start to finish in under an hour! So, scrap buster, cute, fast, and easy is a complete win in my book!

When printing the sewing pattern PDF make sure to adjust the print settings. After you click on the print button in the PDF the printer dialog box will come up. On this screen you want to change the default zoom page size to be Actual Size. If you don’t change this setting then the pattern will print smaller then intended (so sad!).

What To Do!
To begin the wristlet strap keychain you need to download the free pattern from The Pattern Stash. Then decide if you want to make the 1 inch strap or the 1/2 inch strap. Once you cut out your chosen pattern then cut out your fabric. Next, press your strap in half lengthways and press with iron.
Then open the strap you just pressed and push the two sides towards the center mark. Use the iron to press the two sides down.
Next, close the strap back up and once again press.
Then feed your pressed strap through the swivel hook.
Next, open both ends of the strap and pin them together right sides touching.
Then sew down the strap’s ends using a 1/4 inch seam allowance.
Next, use your iron and press open the seam you just made.

Then fold the strap back together. This takes a little patience and some pressing with the iron. Once you have your strap back together and pressed pin the open side all the way around.
Next, starting at the seam topstitch the open side of the strap really close to the edge. You will have to keep moving the swivel hook down as you sew around the entire strap.
Then topstitch the other side of the wristlet strap keychain. Again, you will have to keep moving the swivel hook as you sew around strap.
Next, move the seam of where you sewed the two ends together to under the swivel hook. Then pin the two sides of the strap together.
Then sew across both sides of the strap as close to the swivel hook as your machine foot can get. You want to make sure to go across this a couple of times and end by back stitching to lock your stitches.
And…..then you have a super cute wristlet strap keychain! These super easy straps are super versatile and can be used on your keys, wallets, or the dog treat pouch (shown below).
Isn’t the wristlet strap keychain so easy to make? And the best part about these little guys is they are a total scrap buster and make amazing gifts!
