Quilted Fabric Christmas Tree

Quilted Fabric Christmas Tree

Decorating for Christmas is one of my most favorite things to do! Every year I try to come up with something to make to add to my Christmas decor collection. So, when I was thinking last year about what I wanted to make I had my heart set on making a quilted fabric Christmas tree. However, after I bought all of the supplies and found the perfect fabric…….I didn’t make it! Seriously, the supplies have been just sitting in my craft room for a year (shakes head).

So, since Christmas is approaching I once again turned my thoughts to making something to use as decoration. I decided that I would go through my craft supplies I had on hand to see if I could make something cute without having to buy new supplies. That’s when I came across everything that I had already bought for the quilted fabric Christmas tree! So, even though it didn’t get made last year it ended up getting made this year and is going to look amazing with all of my other holiday decor!

What You Need!

FYI! A thimble is totally optional. However, if you would like to save the tips of your fingers you will want to use one to press the straight pins into the cone (trust me on this).

Important Info!

When printing the PDF pattern make sure to adjust the print settings. After you click on the print button in the PDF the printer dialog box will come up. On this screen you want to change the default zoom page size to be Actual Size. If you don’t change this setting then the pattern will print smaller then intended (so sad!).

What To Do!

To begin the quilted fabric Christmas tree you need to download the free pattern from The Pattern Stash. Then you need to cut out all of the squares for the tree.

Then take the bottom square and lay it right side down under the foam cone. Make sure that the square is centered under the cone.

Place The Bottom Square Under The Foam Cone

Next, take straight pins and pin the four corners of the bottom square to the foam cone.

Pin The Four Corners Up

Then using straight pins pin the rest of the bottom square to the foam cone. Don’t worry if this part doesn’t look super pretty. All of the pins will be covered by the triangles that we are about to add!

Pin The Edges Of The Bottom Square

Next, take one of the squares of fabric A and fold it diagonally to make a triangle.

Then fold the triangle again to make a smaller triangle. Feel free to press your triangle with the iron, but to be totally honest I never do!

Fold Square Again

Next, take two straight pins and pin the triangle onto the cone about 1/4 inch from the bottom of the cone.

Place The Bottom Square Under The Foam Cone

Then place the next triangle to the right of the last one. You want the next triangle tip to be 2 inches from the last triangle tip. Continue adding the other three triangles to the bottom layer of round 1 making sure they are spaced out 2 inches.

Place Next Triangle Onto The Tree

FYI! I like to place all of my triangles facing the same way. As you can see in the above photo I have the open folded side of the triangle facing to the right. When I add each triangle I make sure that that open folded side faces the same direction. This is really a personal preference but I think it makes the triangles lay better.

Next, take a fabric A triangle and place it in the center of two of the triangles from the bottom layer of round 1.

Add Second Layer Of Round 1

Then keep adding triangles to the middle of the triangles that were added on the bottom layer of round 1. Total you should end up with 10 squares for the entire round, 5 in the bottom layer and 5 in the upper layer.

Next, take a triangle of fabric B and place in in the center of one of the bottom layer triangles from the previous round. Measure that the tip of the fabric B triangle is 3/4 inches up from the tip of the round 1 triangle.

Then add the next triangle in the middle of the next bottom layer triangle from round 1. Continue adding the next three fabric B triangles on top of the bottom layer triangles from round 1.

Keep Adding Triangles Around Tree

Next, add the first fabric B triangle to the upper layer of round 2. You will place the fabric B triangle in the center of one of the upper layer triangles from round 1. Make sure that the tips of the fabric A & fabric B triangles are 3/4 inches apart.

Place First Triangle Of The Second Set Of Triangles For Round 2

Then add the last four fabric B triangles on top of the triangles of the upper layer from round 1. Next, you will continue adding rows to your quilted fabric Christmas tree. Each row will have 10 triangles, 5 in the bottom layer and 5 in the upper layer. Continue adding rows alternating colors of the rows (there are a total of 13).

On to the last round! Once you get to round 13 the triangles will really overlap each other which is perfectly normal! So, place the first fabric A triangle centered over the bottom layer triangle from the last round. Continue to add the other four triangles around the tree.

Add First Triangle Of Round 13

Next, add a fabric A triangle centered on top of the upper lay triangle from the last round. Make sure the fabric A triangle tip is 3/4 inch above the tip of the fabric B triangle.

Add Second Set Of Triangles For Round 13

Then add the other four fabric A triangles to finish the last round!

Next, take one of the fabric A squares and press under the edges 1/4 inch.

Fold Final Square's Edges Under And Press

Then take pearlized pins and pin down the four corners of the square on top of the center of the tree. I couldn’t find any pearlized pins that matched my fabric so I just used pins with glass beads added! Make sure that you can’t see any pin after you have pinned down your last piece. If you see any pins showing then you may need to adjust the pins so they are hidden.

Pin Final Square On Top With Pearlized Pins

And…..you’re all done! Of course you could always add a cute fabric star or a ribbon to the top or just leave as is!

Don’t you just love how this turned out? This super cute quilted fabric Christmas tree is the perfect addition to any holiday decor and makes a great gift!
