Dog Treat Pouch Sewing Tutorial

Dog Treat Pouch

My furry loves, Molly & Lucy, are some VERY spoiled pups! Yep, I’m one of THOSE people who makes clothes for their dogs and gives them presents for their birthday and Christmas. Seriously, they even have their own Christmas stockings and ornaments with their names on them (don’t judge).

So, when I take my pups out around town I like to bring some of their favorite snacks with us. Usually, I just put their treats in a sandwich bag and toss it into my purse. However, the other day I started thinking why not make a reusable pouch for their snacks? So, I took the credit card wallet pattern and made a few tweaks to make it into a dog treat pouch!

What You Need!

FYI!

All sewing is done with a 1/4 inch seam allowance.

Important Info!

When printing the sewing pattern PDF make sure to adjust the print settings. After you click on the print button in the PDF the printer dialog box will come up. On this screen you want to change the default zoom page size to be Actual Size. If you don’t change this setting then the pattern will print smaller then intended (so sad!).

What To Do!

To begin the dog treat pouch you need to download the free pattern from The Pattern Stash. I applied clear iron on vinyl before I cut the lining piece so the lining would be waterproof. If you want to add vinyl to the lining then apply using the package directions to a piece of quilting cotton before you cut out the pattern.

Add Iron On Vinyl To Inside Piece

Next, cut out the remaining pieces.

Then take the tab piece and fold it in half lengthways and press.

Fold The Binding In Half And Press

Next, open the tab piece and press the two sides to the center line and press again.

Then close the tab and press really well.

Fold The Binding Back Together And Press

Next, sew down both long sides of the tab really close to the edge.

Sew Down Both Sides Of Binding

Then fold the tab in half and press. Next, measure 4 1/4 inches from the bottom of the dog treat pouch and pin the tab to the outside piece. You can add the tab to either the right or left side of the pouch.

Next, lay the lining piece right side down on top of the outside piece. Then pin or clip around the dog treat pouch making sure to move the tab pin to the top so you don’t hit it with your machine. FYI if you added vinyl to the lining piece then use clips instead of pins because pins can damage the vinyl covering.

Place Both Pieces Right Sides Together

Then sew around the entire dog treat pouch leaving a 1 inch turning hole in the bottom straight edge of the pouch.

Sew Around The Dog Treat Pouch

Next, trim the seams and point cut around the round edge of the pouch. This will ensure that it lays flat after you turn it right side out.

Then turn right side out using the turning hole.

Next, press the pouch (not on the vinyl side) and turn under the turning hole. Pin or clip the turning hole closed.

Use Clips To Hold The Turning Hole

Then top stitch across the straight edge making sure to close the turning hole.

Sew Across The Turning Hole

Next, cut a 1 inch piece of Velcro and pin one side of it 3/4 inches down from the top edge in the center of the pouch. Then sew around the Velcro.

Next, measure 2 1/2 inches from the top edge (where you top stitched earlier) and fold up. Pin or clip the two sides of the pouch.

Fold Up And Clip The Front Of The Dog Treat Pouch

Then sew down both the left and right side of the dog treat pouch.

Sew Down Both Sides

Next, lay the other side of the Velcro on top of the piece that’s sewn down. Then fold the pouch flap down and see where you need to sew the Velcro.

Fold The Flap And See Where The Other Side Of The Velcro Needs To Be Sewn

Then stitch around the top piece of Velcro.

Sew The Top Part Of The Velcro

Next, add a mini carabiner hook so you can easily clip the dog treat pouch to your pant loop or bag!

Add Mini Carabiner And Clip Onto Bag

Then all that is left is to fill up the dog treat pouch with your furry love’s favorite treats!

Add Dog Treats To The Dog Treat Pouch

I love how cute this turned out! I’m sure that my furry loves are going to be thrilled to have treats readily available when you are out on the town!
