Knee Scooter Seat Cushion

Knee Scooter Seat Cushion

If you need to use the tutorial to make a knee scooter seat cushion let me just tell you I’m so sorry and I feel your pain. Literally! I have had ankle surgery twice (on the same ankle) and used my cute pink knee scooter twice! What I learned the first go around is that the seat on the knee scooter is REALLY uncomfortable for your knee. My poor knee felt bruised because of that stupid seat. So, before I went into surgery the second time I got smart. I had some left over foam from my reupholstered arm chair project that I thought would be perfect to make a cushion! Sure enough after I finished the cushion it made the seat so much more squishy and more comfortable on my knee (my knee says THANK YOU). A bonus is that the material I found matches the scooter exactly!

What You Need!

What To Cut!

Just as a side note this is not a one size fits all pattern! I’m sure each knee scooter seat is a slightly different size. My knee scooter measurements were:

  • Top Of Seat 12 1/2 x 6 1/2
  • Side Of Seat (Measured the circumference) 37 x 3

So I cut the following pieces.

  • (2) 14 x 8 Quilting Cotton for Cushion Top
  • 39 x 6 1/2 Quilting Cotton for Side Panel (I had to piece this together)
  • 12 x 6 Foam for Cushion Top

FYI!

All sewing is done with a 1/4 inch seam allowance.

What To Do!

Lay one of the top pieces down wrong side up. Put down your foam down then top with your other top piece right side up. Pin and sew around entire edge with straight stitch.

Sew Around Foam For Knee Scooter Seat Cushion

If you have to piece together your side panel (like me!) then take your side panel pieces and sew two of the short sides together to make a super long strip.

Sew Side Panels Together

Pin the long side panel piece around the edge of the top piece. Make sure to start sewing a few inches from the beginning of the side panel piece. When you get a couple of inches away from the end of the side panel piece stop sewing. Sew the two ends of the side panel together then finish sewing to the top piece of cushion.

Stop Sewing Several Inches From End

Try your cushion on your knee scooter and see exactly where the corners of the seat are. Pin where you need to add boxed corners on the cushion. Sew where you pinned from top to bottom of side panel making sure to not sew the top piece of the cushion. You should start your stitch at the top of the side panel right below the seat cushion top and finish at the bottom of the side panel. You want to box your corners before you add the channel for the elastic! And….. yes I know that the below picture has the channel already sewn but that’s because I forgot to take a picture before I sewed it!

Box Corners Of Knee Scooter Seat Cushion

Fold the bottom edge over 3/4 inch and press with iron.

Sew Down Edge Of Side Panel

Then sew around the channel you just ironed making sure to leave an opening to insert the elastic.

Leave Opening To Add Elastic

Here is the cushion after all the corners have been boxed and the channel for the elastic has been sewn.

Completed Boxed Corners and Elastic Channel

Take a safety pin and attach it to one end of the elastic. Insert into channel and work it around to the other side.

Use Safety Pin To Run Elastic Through Seam

Then pin the two ends of the elastic together making sure that the elastic isn’t twisted in the elastic channel. Time to try this bad boy on your scooter! Make sure that the elastic is tight enough around seat so it doesn’t shift when you use it. If the elastic is too loose or tight then adjust where you have the elastic pinned.

Pin Ends Of Elastic Together

Sew the two ends of the elastic with a zig zag stitch. I like to sew over the end a couple of times to make sure they don’t come apart during use.

Then iron down the elastic channel opening and sew closed.

Sew Closed Opening For Elastic

The last step is to turn the cushion right side out and put it on your knee scooter!

Now you too can look super snazzy while rolling around town!

Also, if you have a metal basket on your knee scooter make sure to check out my post about the magnetic zippered pouch that came in SO handy both times I used the scooter!

This knee scooter seat cushion was such a life saver to my poor knee! Who would have thought just some material and foam would be such a huge help!
