Are Gingher Sewing Scissors Worth The Investment?

Are Gingher Sewing Scissors Worth The Investment?

Have you ever wondered if Gingher sewing scissors are really worth the price they cost? Then you’re not alone! Believe me, I totally get it because I wondered that for years. For years I always bought the inexpensive sewing scissors because I couldn’t bring myself to spend that kind of money on sewing shears! However, that all changed one year when I was given a generous gift card to Joann Fabric.

Since I had enough money to buy a more expensive pair of scissors I started asking around which brand was the best. Time and again everyone I asked said that Gingher was their go to brand for sewing scissors. So, I took a deep breath and made my purchase of the Gingher dressmaker shears (their official name). That purchase was several years ago and since then I have used the scissors thousands of times on countless projects such as the DIY face mask and zippered coin purse! So, are you curious if you too should break down and invest in a pair of Gingher scissors? Then……read on and see the pros and cons of owning a pair!

Pros!

Sharpness!

I LOVE working with sharp scissors when I’m sewing. The Gingher scissors are amazingly sharp and make cutting fabric feel like you are cutting butter! After I bought them I worried that they might not stay sharp for very long since I use them quite often. However, that has NOT been my experience. If my scissors have dulled over the last 8 years that I have owned them then it hasn’t been much. The fact that they have stayed sharp for so many years amazes me every time that I pull them out to use!

Comes With Cover!

Of course this depends on which one of the Gingher scissors that you buy. When I bought my Gingher dressmaker shears they came with a plastic blade cover. This cover makes sure that the scissors don’t accidently come open during storage. I have a healthy fear of scissors (I once cut myself really bad when I was sewing) so I appreciate this added protection against cutting myself. Also, it protects the blades from other things hitting them and causing them to dull. There is nothing worse then your blades dulling for no reason!

Quality!

As soon as you pick up a pair of Gingher scissors you can see the quality of the shears. They are made from high carbon cutlery steel which makes them more durable than cheaper scissors. Also, when you use them they just glide open and close with absolutely NO resistance (so smooth!). After using my scissors for years they still look almost brand new. They are still just as shiny as when I bought them and I noticed that they aren’t easily scratched. Even after me countlessly dropping them (oops!) they still look just as amazing as they did on day one!

Cons!

Cost!

Yes, I’m sure you already figured this one out (just look at the post title). The Gingher sewing scissors’ regular price is at least four times as much as their inexpensive plastic handle counterparts. With that being said, sometimes you can find the scissors on sale at your local craft store. Also, I know that many stores let you use coupons on the Gingher brand so you could possibly only have to pay half price depending on the coupons you use! Unfortunately, if you can’t use coupons or find a sale the regular price for the scissors is a real deterrent for most people.

Sharpening!

Now, like I stated before I’ve never had to sharpen my Gingher scissors. However, I did research how to sharpen them if that need arose. So, according to Gingher’s website they only recommend that they sharpen the scissors. This means that you have to ship your pair of scissors to North Carolina to sharpen them. Unfortunately, because you have to send them away you could be without your sewing shears for 3-4 weeks (this makes me sweat). The good part is that the cost of sharpening the scissors is relatively inexpensive. Although I appreciate that Gingher offers the sharpening service I really wish I could just use someone local to sharpen my scissors!

Heavy!

Maybe this won’t bother you but I’ve never liked heavy scissors. The Gingher scissors are significantly heavier than the traditional plastic handle sewing scissors that you see at the store. Because the scissors are made from high carbon cutlery steel it causes them to be really heavy. Now, I totally understand that they are built out of quality material but that means absolutely nothing when my hand hurts from consecutive using! If you are one of those people who prefer heavy scissors then this really won’t be a con for you!

So, with all of the cons listed above would I repurchase my Ginger scissors? YES! YES! And…….YES! Can you tell I love my scissors? That’s right, I can’t stress enough how amazing these scissors are! They are hardworking, long lasting, and completely worth the investment. I love my dressing shears so much I went and bought a small pair of Gingher scissors to cut small threads when I sew! Oh, if only Gingher made a rotary cutter (I would so buy that!).

There you have it, my personal pros and cons of the Gingher sewing scissors (aka sewing shears). So, I hope my review helps you decide if you too want to become a superfan of Gingher scissors!

  1. I sent mine to be sharpened and it took about 2 weeks. I have had them 20+ years. They were catching a bit like there was a little nick in the blade and had spots of discoloration inside one blade. They came back all shiny and cutting better than I even remembered.
