Journal Pen Holder Tutorial

Journal Pen Holder

Do you have that one thing that you are ALWAYS losing? I’m going to take a wild guess that you do! For me, I seriously lose my favorite mechanical pencil a thousand times a day! It’s funny because I always know exactly where my car keys are but for the life of me I can never find my pencil (shakes head). So, needless to say it totally frustrates me when I go to write something in my planner and can’t find my pencil.

So, after I had REALLY misplaced my pencil the other day and it took me twenty minutes to find, I decided action had to be taken! Recently, I’ve had a lot of requests from readers to create projects that use scrap material. So, this project is a total win-win because this easy journal pen holder will keep my pen from being lost (for the millionth time) and uses almost no material. So, pull out your scrap material and start making a super cute journal pen holder for you and everyone you know!

What You Need!

FYI!

All sewing is done with a 1/4 inch seam allowance.

Important Info!

When printing the sewing pattern PDF make sure to adjust the print settings. After you click on the print button in the PDF the printer dialog box will come up. On this screen you want to change the default zoom page size to be Actual Size. If you don’t change this setting then the pattern will print smaller then intended (so sad!).

What To Do!

To begin the journal pen holder you need to download the free pattern from The Pattern Stash and cut it out. Then you need to figure out how long you need the elastic to be. For that you have to do a little math. I made my journal pen holder for my planner that has a cover that’s 11 inches high but you can make this for any size journal. All you have to do is…..

  • Measure your journal cover from top to bottom (11 inches)
  • Multiple journal cover size by 2 (11 x 2 = 22)
  • Then minus last total by 7 (22 – 7 = 15)
  • Take that number and minus 1 (15 – 1 = 14)
  • So, the length of the elastic for my planner is 14 inches

Then lay the pocket piece on top of one of the main body pieces. Make sure that the main body piece is right side up and that the raw edges of the pocket are aligned to the raw edges of the main body piece.

Next, press the journal pen holder flat. Turn under the open end and use the iron to press it flat. Insert the end of the elastic and pin.

STOP! Before you start sewing, make sure that the elastic isn’t twisted! Then starting at the pinned end top stitch around the journal pen holder super close to the edge.
