DIY Lavender Sachets

DIY Lavender Sachets

Do you know what I hate? When you go to pull out clothes from your dresser or closet and they smell musty. It’s so frustrating! A long time ago I had a boss that went to France and brought me back a lavender sachet for my dresser. It smelled so good and made my clothes smell so fresh. Recently, when I went into my dresser my clothes no longer smelled like sweet lavender! So, I checked the sachet and it no longer smelled! That’s when I decided that I needed to make something to make my clothes and dresser smell good again!

So, I found some dried lavender at my local Joann and started designing the lavender sachets. I knew that for sure I wanted to use them in every one of my dresser drawers. But then I thought why not make them have a hanger so you could slip them over a clothes hanger and add them to your closet! These super easy and quick sachets are the perfect size to fit in your dresser or closet and can be used practically anywhere to make a space smell fresh.

What You Need!

FYI!

All sewing is done with a 1/4 inch seam allowance.

Important Info!

When printing the sewing pattern PDF make sure to adjust the print settings. After you click on the print button in the PDF the printer dialog box will come up. On this screen you want to change the default zoom page size to be Actual Size. If you don’t change this setting then the pattern will print smaller then intended (so sad!).

What To Do!

To begin the lavender sachets you need to download the free pattern from The Pattern Stash. Once you have the pattern you need to cut your fabric pieces.

Cut Out Pattern And Material

Next, fold the hanger strip in half lengthways and press.

Press Hanger In Half

Then open the hanger strip and push the two sides to the center line and press.

Press Both Sides Of Hanger Towards Center Line

Next, fold the hanger strip closed again and press really well.

Then topstitch down both sides of the hanger strip.

Sew Hanger Down Both Sides

Next, place the hanger strip on one of the shorter sides of the outside sachet piece. Measure one inch from either side of the sachet and pin the hanger strip.

Then place the other outside piece right side down on top.

Next, move your hanger strip pins to the top of the fabric sandwich and pin around. I didn’t pin the other end because it won’t be sewn.

Then sew down both sides and the bottom of the sachet. Make sure to stitch over the hanger strip ends a couple of times to reinforce them.

Then push out the seams and press with an iron.

Next, turn under a 1/2 inch of fabric on the sachet side that wasn’t sewn. Press really well with the iron.

Press Under The Open Side

Then topstitch around the sachet 1/4 inch from the edge. Sew all the way around except leave a 1/2 inch hole where the open side is.

You want to make sure to leave a 1/2 inch hole on the open side of the sachet. However, if your funnel end is larger you need to leave a larger opening.

Leave A Hole For Filling

Next, mix the dried lavender with the rice in a bowl. You don’t have to add rice to the dried lavender but I wanted my lavender sachets to have some weight to them. Also, the package of lavender I bought was really small and I wanted to make it stretch!

Next, add the lavender and rice into the sachet using a funnel.

Then once your sachet is full (make sure to not overfill) pin the open end closed.

Next, make sure that you move the lavender and rice away from the topstitching area and finish topstitching your sachet. Try to match the two lines of topstitching that you did earlier.

Then all that is left to do is stick these super sweet smelling cuties in your dresser drawers or on a clothes hanger for your closet!

And…..if you wrap four of these little cuties together with a jute cord then you have an instant gift! These lavender sachets make amazing wedding shower and hostess gifts!

I just love how these lavender sachets turned out! Now every time I pull out my clothes they will smell fresh like spring time!
