Makeup Brush Case

Makeup Brush Case

If you don’t use makeup brushes to apply your makeup you have no clue how much you are missing out on! For years, I would just use the applicators that came with the makeup never knowing any better. Then one day the veil was drawn away and I found Ecotools brushes and I have never looked back! However, I had a major problem! I loved the brushes but didn’t have anywhere to store them where they wouldn’t get hurt.

So, I came up with a plan to sew a makeup brush case! I LOVE my case because it’s so handy to keep your brushes protected and is easily packed for trips! On the inside where the brushes touch the fabric, I was lucky enough to find laminate cotton but you could totally use Pul material, which is what cloth diapers are made out of. Just make sure whatever material you use for the main inside piece that it’s a material that you can wipe down when makeup gets on it.

What To Cut!

Fabric A

  • 13 1/2 x 8 1/2 Laminate Cotton or Pul Material for Inside

Fabric B

  • 13 1/2 x 8 1/2 Quilting Cotton for Outside (or you can make a mini quilt top and cut to these dimensions which is what I did)

Fabric C

  • 13 1/2 x 11 Quilting Cotton for Brush Pocket
  • (2) 2 x 4 Quilting Cotton for Tab

Everything Else

  • 13 1/2 x 8 1/2 Batting
  • 2 x 4 Interfacing for Tab

FYI!

All sewing is done with a 1/4 inch seam allowance.

What To Do!

Take one tab piece and iron down the fusible interfacing.

Iron Interfacing On One Of The Tab Pieces

Then place both tab pieces right sides together and pin.

Lay Tab Pieces Right Sides Together

Next, draw a curve on the tab piece that has the interfacing (otherwise you won’t be able to see it).

Mark A Curve On The Tab Piece

Then sew where you drew your curve and trim the seams.

Turn right side out, using a plastic chop stick REALLY helps here!

Press your amazing new tab with iron!

If you are using a solid piece of fabric for the outside then you can totally ignore this picture! I decided to make a mini quilt top and then cut it down to the proper size. If you would like to copy this design it’s 4 x 2 rectangles that I alternated in each row.

So take the brush pocket piece and fold in half with wrong sides together making the 13 1/2 inch sides touch each other.

Fold Over Brush Pocket Piece

Using a straight stitch sew down the top folded side of the pocket piece.

Straight Stitch Top Edge Of Brush Pocket

Lay the laminate cotton down with right sides up and place the brush pocket piece with the raw edges at the bottom. Sew around the entire edge of the brush pocket piece trying to get as close to the edge as possible. You don’t have to worry about if this stitch isn’t perfect because it’s just a stay stitch that you won’t see when the case is finished.

Pin Brush Pocket To Laminate Cotton and Sew Around Edges

Now take out your makeup brushes and use them to measure how big the slots need to be. Remember that makeup brushes are round so if you sew the slots too narrow then you won’t be able to inset the brushes. Pin where the sewing lines need to be. For mine the slots from right to left measured 3, 2 3/4, 1 1/2, 1 1/2, and 4 1/2 inches.

Use Makeup Brushes To Measure Brush Slots

Using your pins as a guide sew from the top of the brush pocket piece all the way down to the end. Continue sewing lines until all of your slots are finished!

Sew Where Down The Brush Pocket Where You Measured

Time to make a fabric sandwich! Lay down your batting and then lay your laminate cotton wrong side down on top of that. To finish this sandwich off lay your outside fabric on top of your laminate cotton right sides together.

Make Fabric Sandwich

So, pull back your outside material from your sandwich on the right side of the case and center your tab. Make sure to pin tab down so it doesn’t shift during sewing!

Center Tab On Right Side Of Makeup Brush Case

Sew all the way around edge of case making sure to leave an 1 inch opening in bottom of case for turning.

Make Sure To Leave An Opening For Turning

Trim the seams and trim the batting away from the turning hole.

Cut Away The Batting Away From The Turning Hole

Turn case right side out making sure to fully push out each corner.

Turn Makeup Brush Case Right Side Out

Then press makeup brush case with iron.

Attach the top part of the pearl snap fastener to the tab using the directions on the package.

Measure Where Pearl Snap Should Go

Measure where the bottom part of the pearl snap fastener should go on the case and mark it.

Mark Where The Bottom Pearl Snap Piece Goes

Using the turning hole, insert interfacing where the bottom part of the pearl snap fastener will go. Iron down and then attach the bottom part of the fastener. Double check that the snap is where you want it to be.

Insert Bottom Pearl Snap Piece

Then iron down the turning hole and pin. Hand stitch the hole and once again press the makeup brush case.

Pin Turning Hole and Hand Stitch

There you have it! This handy makeup brush case is ready for use or for giving!

Finished Makeup Brush Case

The last step is to put in your makeup brushes!

Put Brushes In Makeup Brush Case

This amazing makeup brush case is amazing to store your makeup brushes in and is really great for travel!
