Travel Jewelry Roll Tutorial

Travel Jewelry Roll

I absolutely LOVE jewelry! This could have something to do with the fact that I once worked at James Avery Craftsman! Because I have worked for a jewelry store I’m super OCD about taking care of my jewelry. This is why anytime that I take off my jewelry I make sure I have something to put it in. So, if you just throw your jewelry in the bottom of your purse please for my sake keep that to yourself! This little jewelry roll is the perfect friend to your jewelry and can easily be carried in your purse, backpack, or suitcase.

What You Need!

Important Info!

When printing the sewing pattern PDF make sure to adjust the print settings. After you click on the print button in the PDF the printer dialog box will come up. On this screen you want to change the default zoom page size to be Actual Size. If you don’t change this setting then the pattern will print smaller then intended (so sad!).

What To Cut!

This travel jewelry roll can be made in three different sizes small, medium, and large. While the tutorial will be exactly the same regardless what size you make the only instructions that will be different will be in the cutting of your jewelry roll pieces. The jewelry roll I made for this tutorial is the medium size.

FYI!

All sewing is done with a 1/4 inch seam allowance.

What To Do!

To begin the travel jewelry roll you need to download the free printable pattern from The Pattern Stash and cut out the pieces for the size you want to make. Then take two of your pocket pieces and iron the interfacing on the wrong side of the fabric. I like to trim the interfacing away from the edges of the pocket pieces to help reduce bulk.

Iron Interfacing To Pocket Pieces

Then take your inside piece and fold it in half. This will help you place your pocket pieces.

Then place your interfacing pocket pieces on the inside piece right sides together. The pocket pieces should measure 1/2 inch from both left and right sides of the inside piece. Then pin your pocket pieces.

Pin Pocket Pieces To Inside Piece

Using the disappearing ink pen draw a rectangle on both pocket pieces. The top line of the rectangle should be placed 1/2 inch from the top of the pocket and the side lines should be placed 1 1/4 inch from the left and right sides of the inside piece. Then after you have drawn your top line of the rectangle measure 10/16 inch from that line and draw your bottom line.

Draw Rectangle On Pocket Piece

Then using a straight stitch sew around the rectangle on both pocket pieces.

Sew Around Drawn Rectangle

Make sure to leave your needle down as you make the turn at both ends of the rectangle.

Leave Needle Down When Turning The Corner Of Rectangle

After sewing, use disappearing ink to draw a line right down the center of the rectangle. Then draw two triangles at either end of the rectangle.

Draw A Line and Triangles In Center Of Rectangle

CAREFULLY cut through the line and triangles in the rectangle. You will be cutting through two pieces of fabric, the pocket and inside piece.

Carefully Cut Line and Triangles

Then cut the triangles getting as close as possible to the seam around the rectangle. MAKE sure to not cut those seams or you will have a hole in your finished jewelry roll!

Make Sure To Not Cut The Seams Around Triangle

Now the fun part! Then take the pocket piece and push it through the hole towards the back of the inside piece.

Push Pocket Through To Back Side

Once you have the pocket on the backside of the inside piece press with iron and make sure the pocket isn’t pulling in the corners of your opening. If you do have pulling you probably didn’t cut as close to the triangle corners as you should have. You can fix this by putting the pocket back through the opening and recutting.

Press Down The Pocket Opening

Here is the inside piece after both of the openings for the pockets have been created.

So, this is what the back of the inside piece looks like.

So, place the zipper with the pull to the left in the center of the pocket opening. Then match up the zipper on left side of the opening and leave the excess of the zipper on the right side.

Center Zipper In Pocket Opening

While using a zipper foot, sew down the zipper getting as close to the edge as possible. Then after sewing cut off the excess zipper making sure to not cut the stitch you just sewed. Repeat for other pocket opening.

Use Zipper Foot and Sew Around Zipper

Then take the other two pocket pieces and place them right sides together on the pocket pieces that you just added a zipper to.

Pin Back Pocket Pieces To Front Pocket Piece

Next, sew around the outside of the pocket making sure to NOT sew down the inside piece. I find it easier to sew from the top side of the pocket and move the inside piece away from the machine as I move around the pocket.

Sew Around Each Pocket

In the bottom pocket leave a 2 inch opening for turning.

Leave An Opening In Bottom Pocket For Turning

As you can see the inside of my pockets are the same color as the inside material. This was a mistake on my part (sad sigh) that I didn’t realize until I was this far into making the jewelry roll. However, it looks way cuter if you use contrasting fabric (trust me on this!).

Finished Pocket

Now it’s time to make the tab! Take the two tab pieces and place them right sides together.

Place Tab Pieces Together

Next, iron the interfacing to the wrong side of one of the tab pieces. Then draw a curve on the tab to follow with machine.

Draw A Curve On Tab

While using a straight stitch follow the curve you drew in the above step. Then trim the seams, turn right side out, and press with iron.

Sew Tab Following Curve and Trim Seams

Then place the tab at the center top of the inside piece.

Pin Tab To The Center Of The Inside Piece

Make sure the bottom pocket zipper is open all the way. Trust me this is going to INFURIATE you later if you miss this step!

Unzip Bottom Pocket

So, place the outside piece right side down on top of inside piece and then add the batting. Then sew around entire edge of the jewelry roll. While sewing make sure that you don’t accidentally sew the pockets!

Sew Around Entire Edge Of Travel Jewelry Keeper

Then trim the seams of the jewelry roll. Remember that opening we left in the bottom pocket? Yep, that is what we are going to use to turn the jewelry roll! I LOVE using this method because when the jewelry roll is finished you don’t see your opening!

Use Turning Hole In Pocket To Turn Travel Jewelry Keeper

So, turn the jewelry roll right side out.

Turn Travel Jewelry Keeper Right Side Out

Make sure to push out all seams and corners. Then press with iron.

Push Out All Edges and Corners

Measure where you want to add the pearl snap fastener. Make sure you don’t put the snap too far in because you need some wiggle room since you will be adding jewelry to your roll and that will add some bulk.

Measure Where To Attach Pearl Snap Fastener

While using the opening in the bottom pocket, insert a small piece of interfacing where you want your snap to be on the outside of the roll. Next, iron the interfacing down. Then add your snap according to the directions on the package.

Insert Interfacing For Pearl Snap Fastener

Then iron the turning hole in the pocket and pin.

Press and Pin Turning Hole

While using a straight stitch, sew close to the edge of the turning hole.

Sew Close To Edge Of Turning Hole

So, I like to sew over the turning hole opening a couple of times so it will hold up to constant use. Then all that is left to do is tuck the bottom pocket back into place.

Sew Turning Hole Closed

Lastly, press the finished jewelry roll and add your jewelry!

Finished Travel Jewelry Keeper

So, now your jewelry will be safe wherever life takes you!
