I absolutely love my dog. Yes, I’ll be the first to admit that I’m one of those people who dresses up my dog and takes photos. Why, you ask? Well it should be quite obvious, because she’s so darn cute! Molly Elizabeth (a.k.a my little ME) is my super sweet Boston Terrier mix that I still refer to as “My Puppy”.
Four years ago I started taking birthday photos of Molly. Needless to say, this is not Molly’s favorite thing to do! Before you feel too badly for her for being subjected to this I should mention that I also made her favorite Almond Butter and Banana Pupcakes, which she LOVES! Last year, I made her a head bow which she quickly ripped off so this year I thought I would make her a teal and pink tutu for her birthday photo shoot (because it’s harder for her to get off)!

What You Need!
- Tulle
- 1/2 Inch Elastic
- Needle and thread
- Super Cute Dog That Desperately Needs A Tutu
FYI! I used two yards of tulle to make Molly’s tutu but you might need more or less depending on how big or little your pup is.
What To Do!
The first step in making this easy dog tutu is to measure your furry love around their stomach. I did a sneak attack on Molly and measured while she slept!
Sew the two ends of the elastic together. You could do this by hand but I prefer to use my machine for this. If you do use the machine use a zig zag stitch so your stitches won’t break when you’re pulling on the elastic. MAKE SURE that your elastic isn’t twisted before you sew together!
Once you have sewn the elastic together try it on your baby to make sure it’s the right size. This will be the best time to adjust the size of the elastic if adjustment is necessary. Can you tell Molly is less than happy about this?
While the elastic is on your dog measure how long you need the tutu to be. I over estimated Molly’s measurement because I figured if it was too long I could trim it. Whatever measurement you get multiply that number by 2, then add 2 inches to that number. For example, I measured Molly at 7 inches long so I multiplied that by two and got 14, then I added an extra 2 inches for a total of 16 inches.
Using your rotary blade (I LOVE mine!) cut the tulle into 2 inch strips. Once your have cut the 2 inch strips then cut them as long as the measurement from the last step. So, my strips were 16 x 2.
Once you have cut all of your strips, take the first one and fold it in half. Lay the folded strip under the elastic band you made earlier.
Pull the tall ends of the strip through the open hole of the strip.
Pull the tail ends of the strip until the strip is tight on the elastic.
Add the next strip the same way. Fold the strip in half, place it under the elastic band, put the tail ends of the strip through the hole of the strip (where my fingers are).
Pull the tail ends of the strip tight and then push the strip towards the last strip.
Continue adding the tulle strips in any color pattern you want! I choose to do the colors every other strip.
Make sure when you pull the tail ends tight that you don’t pull them too tight! If this does happen to you don’t panic! Just play with the tulle strip and gently pull it loose to redo it.
Continue all the way around the elastic band filling it as full as you like! Unfortunately, the two yards of tulle wasn’t exactly enough to cover all of the white of the elastic. But in the end, Molly is a dog and I’m pretty sure she can deal with seeing the white!
Once you are finished with the tutu it’s time to put it on your baby and take amazing photos!
But make sure you’re quick with the picture getting because if your pup is like mine, her sitting still is a limited time offer! After eating like 18 Rachel Ray Burger Bites treats she was so over the whole experience!
This tutorial for the easy dog tutu would totally work for your human child as well as your fur baby. How cute would it be to make your child and fur baby matching tutu’s? If you do this please send me pictures!
