DIY Veil Face Mask Sewing Pattern

DIY Veil Face Mask Sewing Pattern

So, here’s how the story goes. I made a really easy and really cute DIY Face Mask Pattern and I was pretty happy with myself. Then as I was wearing the mask for extended periods of time I kept having trouble with my asthma. Yep, that’s right the mask causes me to have an a massive asthma attack every time I wear it! Summer in Texas has always been really hard on my breathing because of the heat but add a well fitting mask to the heat and it’s a recipe for an asthma attack.

So, in order to you know keep breathing I set out to create a face mask that I can use. Through some trial and error I came up with the DIY veil face mask sewing pattern. Because this mask is open at the bottom it allows for some air flow and helps me to breathe more comfortably (my lungs thank me). Also, as an added bonus this mask feels slightly cooler than my previous mask which I will take!

What You Need!

  • Quilting Cotton ~ 2 Colors
  • 1/4 Elastic or Any Small Elastic
  • Matching Thread
  • Free #10 Veil Face Mask Printable Pattern ~ Available in The Pattern Stash! Head on down to the bottom of the page, fill out the form, and instantly receive an email with the password!

FYI! You don’t have to use two colors of quilting cotton, but I did because I wanted to be able to tell which side went out.

Pattern FYI!

Good news! I have created three different sizes of the DIY veil face mask sewing pattern! Please Note: The below sizes are approximate as every face is different. So, to get the measurements of your face measure from right in front of one ear then across your nose to the other front of the ear.

  • Small Pattern ~ Fits face sizes 9-10 inches
  • Medium Pattern ~ Fits face sizes 11-12 inches
  • Large Pattern ~ Fits face sizes 13-14 inches

Important Info!

When printing the sewing pattern PDF make sure to adjust the print settings. After you click on the print button in the PDF the printer dialog box will come up. On this screen you want to change the default zoom page size to be Actual Size. If you don’t change this setting then the pattern will print smaller then intended (so sad!).

What To Cut!

  • Cut Two Pieces From Pattern
  • Small ~ 2 Elastic Pieces 5 1/4 Inches Long
  • Medium ~ 2 Elastic Pieces 5 1/2 Inches Long
  • Large ~ 2 Elastic Pieces 5 3/4 Inches Long

FYI!

All sewing is done with a 1/4 inch seam allowance.

What To Do!

To begin the DIY veil face mask you need to download the free pattern from The Pattern Stash and cut it out. Then once everything is cut take one of the main body pieces and measure 1/2 inch down from the top. This is where the first elastic will go. Then measure 2 3/4 inches down from the top and pin your next elastic. MAKE SURE that the elastic is not twisted!

Next, sew both sides of the elastic super close to the edge of the fabric. Then repeat for the other side of the mask. Now, you want to gently try on your face mask to see if the elastic is long/short enough for you. When you try on your mask at this point it should fit pretty snuggly but not super tight.

Then after you have made sure the elastic is the right size, place both sides of the main body pieces right sides together.

Making sure that the elastic is tucked in between your two main pieces pin all the way around mask.

Next, sew all the way around the mask leaving a 2 inch hole for turning at the bottom.

Then make tiny cuts around the curve making super sure to NOT cut your stitches. DO NOT make tiny cuts where your turning hole is.

Now it’s time to turn your DIY veil face mask through the turning hole!

Then press out all of the face mask seams. Try on your mask one more time to ensure that the elastic is the right size.

  1. Thank you so much for this. Made one yesterday to wear for work. Made a few adjustments due to the wearing of glasses. First time I was able to not use my emergency inhaler at work.

      1. Corinney, you asked what I changed, I put a small dart at the center of the top. Frames the top to the nose
