DIY Fabric Chapstick Holder ~ It's So Corinney

DIY Fabric Chapstick Holder

Why is it that I can find my chapstick with no problem…..until my lips hurt and I need it? Seriously, I can place my chapstick in my purse and be super sure where I put it but then when I need it the darn thing has gone missing! Am I the only one with this annoying problem? I’m going to take a wild guess that I’m not! So for the sake of both yours and my chapped lips, I decided to design a fabric chapstick holder with a clip so we will at all times know exactly where our chapstick is (our lips will thank me).

So recently I’ve been really trying (and somewhat succeeding) in using only my scrap fabric stash to create new projects. When I started designing the DIY fabric chapstick holder I got super excited because this is the PERFECT scrap buster project! This super cute holder only uses 1/8 yard of two fabrics so you can use practically any scrap fabric you have left over from other projects which makes this project cost almost nothing (total sewing win)!

What You Need!

FYI!

All sewing is done with a 1/4 inch seam allowance unless stated otherwise.

Important Info!

When printing the sewing pattern PDF make sure to adjust the print settings. After you click on the print button in the PDF the printer dialog box will come up. On this screen you want to change the default zoom page size to be Actual Size. If you don’t change this setting then the pattern will print smaller than intended (so sad!).

What To Do!

To begin the DIY fabric chapstick holder you need to download the free pattern from The Pattern Stash and cut it out. Once everything is cut then take the tab piece and iron it in half with right sides together.

Fold Tab For Chapstick Holder

Then open the tab and with the iron press the two sides towards the center line you just made.

Press Tab Sides Towards Center

Next, close the tab back up and press really well.

Then topstitch both sides of the tab really close to the edges. Set the tab aside until we assemble the fabric chapstick holder.

Topstitch Both Sides Of Tab

Next, take the outside piece and press the fusible interfacing to the wrong side of the fabric.

Then take the tab and fold it in half and press.

Next, lay your inside piece right side up.

Then take the folded tab and pin/clip to the right corner. FYI! You could totally put the tab on the top or left side of the chapstick holder if you wanted! And…if you wanted to use a traditional swivel clip you would need to add it to the tab in this step.

Next, lay your outside piece right side down on top of the inside piece and clip. The blue clips in the below picture indicate where I will put my 1 1/2 inch turning hole.

Then sew around the chapstick holder making sure to leave a 1 1/2 inch turning hole. Be sure to put your needle down and pivot your machine foot when you get to the angles at the top of the chapstick holder.

Next, clip your seams, especially the corners, and flip right side out through your turning hole.

Turn Chapstick Holder Right Side Out

Then press the chapstick holder really well. Make sure to turn under the seam allowance of the turning hole and press.

Press Chapstick Holder Really Well

Next, fold the bottom up 2 3/4 inches and clip.

Then topstitch around the entire chapstick holder (except the bottom) making sure you reinforce both top sides of the pocket.
