DIY Texas Wood Magnets

DIY Texas Wood Magnets

Confession time! I have always had a major addiction to magnets! No matter where you take me I always seem to find a cute magnet. I love buying magnets but also as you’ll see in my post How To Make Custom Magnets I love making magnets as well! Recently, my sister’s puppy ate my super cute Texas magnet (so sad). The dog is fine but the same can’t be said for the Texas magnet!

So, to make myself feel better about losing my Texas magnet I decided to make a new one with my Cricut Maker. I designed three different styles that can be cut out of basswood and then decorated. After I cut and painted the Texas magnets with metallic acrylic paint I added vinyl words to them and they turned out so cute! Now, I can once again show my Texas pride on my refrigerator with these cute magnets (as long as I keep them away from my sister’s dog).

What To Do!

To begin the DIY Texas wood magnets you need to download the free SVG file from The Pattern Stash and upload it into Cricut Design Space. Need help doing this? Check out my post How To Upload SVG Files to Cricut Design Space for step-by-step instructions! Next, you need to tape the basswood to the strong grip cutting mat using painter’s tape.

Tape Basswood To Cricut Strong Grip Mat

Once you have the wood secured to the mat it’s time to cut! Since you are cutting wood you need to move all of the white star rollers on the bar in the Cricut all the way to the right. If you don’t the rollers will leave marks on your wood (trust me on this). Also, click the mirror button in Cricut Design Space before you cut your wood.

Tip! When you cut basswood Cricut automatically makes 14 passes over the design. This is because every pass it makes it cuts a little bit deeper. Because this is just the standard amount you need to watch your Cricut while it’s cutting to make sure that you need the Cricut to do the full 14 passes. Once you get to 9 or 10 pause the Cricut and see if your design has been cut all the way through. This will prevent the Cricut from cutting too deep and ruining your mat.

After all of the pieces have been cut paint your cute Texas magnets any color you want! I used a metallic paint but you could use any type of acrylic paint that you like. Make sure to leave the magnets to dry for a couple of hours before you add the vinyl.

Then cut out your vinyl words and weed them. Next, use the Cricut scraper to adhere the vinyl letters to the transfer tape. Remove the backing of the vinyl letters.

Then line up the word on the front of the Texas magnet. Make sure that you have it where you want it before you place it down (it’s super hard to move after it’s stuck).

Next, take the Cricut scraper and rub the vinyl letters down onto the wood Texas.

Then carefully remove the transfer tape. Double check that all of the vinyl letters are fully down.

      Remove Transfer Tape

Next, cut about an inch of the adhesive magnetic strip and remove the backing.

      Remove Magnets Backing

Then place the magnetic strip to the back of the Texas wood magnet. Depending on well the magnet sticks to the back of the Texas you might want to place the finished magnet under a small book to make sure the magnet sticks well.

Next, repeat the process for the other Texas wood magnet. Then you’re all done! Now you are ready to hang the DIY Texas wood magnets on any metal surface (or gift).

Aren’t these super cute? I love how they turned out and think these would make great stocking stuffers for Christmas or a small hostess gift! And…..if you’re not from Texas (I still love you) and would love some magnets with your state’s shape then let me know! Just add which state you would like me to design in the comment section!
