DIY Grocery Basket Handle Cover Tutorial

Grocery Basket Handle Cover

So….here’s the thing. I totally appreciate that the grocery stores are trying to help prevent their customers from getting sick by sanitizing their shopping carts. However, turns out that I’m allergic to whatever it is that they are using to do the sanitizing (who knew?). Plus, how gross is it to get a shopping cart and the handle is soaking wet? Yep, super gross!

So, I decided that something needed to be done. My sister showed me a grocery basket handle cover that they have for sale at the store for over five dollars! That’s when she looked at me and said “You could make something like this” and she was totally right! Instead of spending my hard earned cash I went home and created my own grocery basket handle cover using scrap material and some Velcro ties (meant to hold cords) that I had on hand! So, in the end this basket handle cover cost me absolutely nothing (which is my favorite price)!

What You Need!

FYI!

All sewing is done with a 1/4 inch seam allowance.

Important Info!

When printing the sewing pattern PDF make sure to adjust the print settings. After you click on the print button in the PDF the printer dialog box will come up. On this screen you want to change the default zoom page size to be Actual Size. If you don’t change this setting then the pattern will print smaller then intended (so sad!).

What To Do!

To begin the grocery basket handle cover you need to download the free pattern from The Pattern Stash and cut out the pattern and material. Then lay the two pieces on top of each other right sides together.

Lay Both Piece Right Sides Together

Make sure to leave a 1 inch hole for turning your grocery basket handle cover. Next, sew around the entire handle cover except where you pinned for the turning hole.

Then trim your seams and turn right side out through your turning hole.

Next, press the basket handle cover and turn under your turning hole. Then sew around the entire edge of the basket handle cover making sure that you close your turning hole.

Press, Pin, And Sew Around Entire Edge

Next, pin your Velcro 1/2 inch from the edge of the basket handle cover. As you can see I used the Velcro cord ties because it’s all I had on hand. You want your Velcro to run the entire length of the handle cover.

Lay Velcro At Edge Of First Side

Then pin the other side of the Velcro on the opposite side’s edge of the basket handle cover. Once pinned sew all the Velcro down.

Then……you can Velcro your basket handle cover together!
