Texas Trash White Chocolate Trail Mix

Texas Trash Trail Mix

Is there anything better than getting a gift? No, there isn’t! I love giving gifts, I mean seriously love giving gifts. When I worked at a retail store I would give gifts to 40 employees each Christmas! I have given every type of gift imaginable including making magnetic zippered pouches and zippered coin purses for everyone. Needless to say, buying or making gifts for that many people can be a daunting task, not to mention expensive!

So, in my quest to simplify my gift giving (and cut cost) I started giving people snacks as gifts. Little did I know when I started this practice how much people would love it! Over the years I have done so many different snack gifts for holidays including snowman wrapped candy boxes (so cute) and devil’s food cake balls. However, by far my most requested and sought after snack that I have EVER given is hands down Texas trash trail mix. And do you know the best part about this recipe? It’s super quick to make (total win).

Now, before you embark on making this recipe let me warn you! After you make Texas trash for people that is all you will EVER be asked for! People harass me for Texas trash on a regular basis and I have even been bribed to make a batch!

What You Need!

  • 1 Mini Pretzels 16 Ounce Bag (Family Size)
  • 3 Nestle Toll House Premier White Morsels 12 Ounce Bag
  • 1 Rice Chex Cereal 18 Ounce Box (any flavor of Chex would work)
  • 2 Reese’s Peanut Butter Baking Chips 10 Ounce Bag
  • 1 M&M’S Milk Chocolate Minis Candy 10.1 Ounce Bag
  • 1 Wilton Candy Melts Bag

FYI! Don’t like Reese’s baking chips? No problem! This recipe is so easy to just swap out the peanut butter chips with any other baking chips that tickle your fancy! You could even use the Andes mints baking chips!

What To Do!

To begin making this amazing Texas trash trail mix find a VERY large bowl or pan.

In your very large bowl/pan mix everything except the white morsels and candy melts. Make sure to NOT put the crumbs of the Chex cereal and the pretzels into your bowl!

Mix All of The Ingredients Except The White Chocolate and Candy Melts

To melt the white morsels you will need a double boiler. Now, I don’t have a double boiler (even though I wish I did!) so don’t fret if you don’t either! Just take your stockpot and put some water on the bottom of it.

Put Water Into Pan

Then, find a bowl, or in my case a pie dish, that fits on top of the pan. Make sure to have NO water in the top bowl or it will make the white morsels wonky when they start melting (I learned this the hard way).

Place A Glass Pie Dish Over Pan With Water

Add all of the white morsels to the top bowl and put onto stove top. Put the burner on a low heat so you don’t burn the morsels and stir continually.

Once the white morsels are completely melted, pour over the dry ingredients. It really comes in handy to have a buddy help you with this part! Mix the dry ingredients until they are evenly covered.

Pour White Chocolate Onto Dry Ingredients and Stir

Cover a large flat surface with wax paper. Overlap the wax paper so none of the flat surface is left exposed.

Cover Surface with Wax Paper

Pour out your Texas trash trail mixture onto the wax paper. Make sure that you don’t have any big mounds of the Texas trash otherwise it will dry in giant clumps.

Next, using the same method you used for the white morsels melt the Wilton candy melts. Once melted, take a butter knife and just splatter the candy melts onto the Texas trash. This step is totally optional but it makes the Texas trash look fabulous! Let sit on flat surface until completely dry and then bag up to give (or eat!).

Finished Texas Trash White Chocolate Trail Mix

I absolutely love this recipe because it’s so simple and versatile because you can change up what type of baking chips you add. Also, the Wilton candy melts come in a large assortment of colors so you can change the look of the Texas trash depending on the holiday or occasion!
